Seems like it doesn’t hold an edge for very long, but I’m new to hook blades
Over the years I’ve used straight utility blades a lot. After seeing roofers use the hook blades for cutting asphalt shingles, and golf club builders use the hook blade to remove grips from graphite shafts, I thought I’d give these a try. Keep in mind, I’ve never used hook blades before so wasn’t sure what to expect.I’ve been primarily using these blades to cut the tape on cardboard boxes, then slice the cardboard into smaller pieces to fit in the recycles bins. In the past I’ve used a straight utility blade for this work. The hook blade is fantastic for cutting the tape because there’s no risk of cutting too far into the box and damaging the product inside. Cutting cardboard was also a breeze, at first. I did find that after cutting maybe ten to twenty boxes the hook blade had a hard time with the initial cut on the cardboard. It acted like it lost the sharp edge. If I rotated the handle a little sometime the blade would start the cut, and sometimes it wouldn’t. Once started the blade easily cut the cardboard. My best guess is the blade became dull because when I put in a new blade it worked great again. What I don’t know is if this amount of wear is normal (cardboard is an abrasive and does dull knives). I don’t remember going through straight utility blades this quickly, but the straight blades do have a larger sharp edge so maybe that’s why they seem to last longer.I did try to cut one piece of asphalt shingle and even with a ‘used’ hook blade the cut was smooth and easy, much better than when I’ve used a straight utility knife.Like I said earlier, I’m knew to hook blades so this may be typical for how long they last. Without knowing for sure, I’m giving them a 3-star, thinking this is ‘average’ performance.
