Incredible. Like magic.
We had these when I worked in a school, but to be honest I never had enough time to really make progress with the strugglers for all the usual reasons! Now having broken free and tutoring privately, I have lots of children who struggle with maths. I get great results using hands-on resources but having had a child recently diagnosed with Dyscalculia and some others possibly similar, I bought the Ronit Bird book. I decided to try these as she recommends them and wow! Very interesting! I've only had them a week and have tried them with four or five kiddies and we love them. They are very revealing (I'm a detective when looking for gaps) and they brought out tons of conversation. They really are limitless. The kiddies caught on right away that the red was worth two etc and because it's only a small pack we naturally needed to use other rods to make up the numbers so they are learning more all the time. I absolutely love them. I didn't want plastic as I love tactile resources and wood is much nicer. I've ordered the Numicon number line as apparently they fit and I feel I need this to really help. I really can't praise them enough. The only problem is that the set is too small for me, I want 10 10's, so I'm going to buy a bigger set. My other complaint is that the tray is rubbish. The edges are rounded inside, so the rods don't go to the edge and sit right! I e binned the box and bought a big zip up bag from the Pound Shop. Can't wait to use them again next week. Just Fab!

A versatile set
This is a versatile set of Cuisenaire Rods, in a good selection of lengths and bright colours. Cuisenaire rods have various functions in teaching and learning. They are of course good for visualising arithmetic. But they can also be used in language teaching, to represent syllables and stresses. This is a sturdy set that should prove pretty indestructable.

A good way of starting out with mathematics, particularly arithmetic
Good for what it does but not enough rods for which however I blame myself (though for number of rods supplied perhaps a bit pricey)! Should have ordered a set with more pieces! Very good introduction to literally playing with numbers and I remember Cuisenaire rods from when I was young or very young. My very first school used them.

They just get more and more useful!!
I decided to start using cuisenaire rods in private one-on-one English classes recently because I noticed that many of my students were getting frustrated with how their grammar knowledge relates to the English they were picking up in day to day life. There seems to be quite a lot of paranoia amongst students that the English they are being taught isn't the same as the English that is actually used!! I was just curious to find out what sort of effect the rods would have...After gaining some familiarity, I am finding that many students now illustrate EVERYTHING (including timelines for verb tenses) with rods!! After two weeks, they are using the rods to illustrate stories, to show comparatives and superlatives, to show different verb tenses in a sentence, to indicate subordinate clauses, to convert sentences into questions, to stand in place of people, vehicles, etc. when considering hypothetical situations, and even to help re-enact their favourite football moments!!Students started with puzzled looks on their faces when I introduced them and one even found it a bit patronising that I was using little coloured rods to help things along. Then - once they realised how useful they are - they forgot that the rods look like something out of a nursery and started innovating new ways of using them! After showing students that the rods can represent ANYTHING they are now showing me new ways of using them all the time!!My recommendation for one-on-one classes: just put them in the middle of the table and see what happens! You'll be amazed!!A short note on the product: if you don't want to lose all the tiny 1-unit and 2-unit rods during your first class then I suggest that you buy two or three clear plastic envelopes from Ryman's (where they are dirt cheap). The plastic container that the rods come in is practically designed to help you lose them!!

Learning maths can be fun with Cuisenaire
Ideal when teaching even young children about number and algebra. I have purchased it to use with 3 year old grandsons who are showing a real interest in numbers. Although it comes with a booklet I recommend using it with Gattengo Mathematics Textbook 1 and YouTube videos of Gattengo at work as a start. The rods range from 1 to 10 centimetres in length so can also be use for measuring. I recommend this product to parents, grandparents and anyone working with children on number and algebra concepts.

Exactly what I wanted
I like this product. Arrived on time, and was of a very good quality. The number of rods is a little confusing in the description, though. I thought I was buying four hundred something rods, but it turned out they were about 74. The description mentions both numbers. However, 74 is enough for me now.

This illustration does not depict what you get!
What a pity I didn't read the reviews for this item. I foolishly assumed that the illustration showed what I was buying. I'm not quibbling about the quantity of rods in the box, after all it is not an expensive set but as another reviewer wrote 'it's not a box with partitions. its just an open plastic tray'. From some years teaching I know that sorting the rods into the appropriate partitions is a great help for children's understanding of the relationship to the numbers. They can see the different sizes easily and soon learn which numbers they correspond to. Unfortunately a jumble of rods doesn't really help.

Fantastic
Fantastic for teaching maths concepts. Also great for building towers and shapes. Useful for many games in fact. One improvement could be better storage and you get the box with a tray but it’s not very reliable.
