Does This Extra Strong Oily Bean Rev To The Limit, Or Can It Maybe Be A More Relaxed Drive?
OK, obvious car puns with this brand name to one side, I was a bit concerned this would be too much for me. I normally don't go for coffee rated at the maximum strength of the scale, preferring a 3 or 4 out of 5. This Ferraris coffee is rated as the full fat five stars!Opening the bag the dark roasted beans have an oily sheen to them and that is also felt when handling them. There is a gorgeous aroma from them and after consulting my bean-to-cup machine, it recommended a Medium grind with Medium temperature in the brewing process. The resulting espresso shot is rich and dark with a good crema to it. As an espresso, it does punch at that 5 out of 5 strength rating with a strong bitterness to it. But when used as a foundation for a Flat White or a White Americano, it becomes much more accessible. Then it is more well balanced, that bitterness subdues massively and it becomes a very enjoyable, smooth experience.A couple of small notes. The first is that the bag doesn't clearly state whether these are 100% Arabica beans or a combination of Arabica and Robusta. Though it states it is a "blend", I do feel the bag should tell you this information and what percentages are used.Secondly, I think due to that oily nature of the beans, I did find I had to clean my machine a bit more around the exit (where the compressed puck is dropped). Not a major issue, but one I feel worth mentioning.

Mild until the aftertaste
I don't know why this is labelled extra strong, as to my palette it's quite bland. On my Jura bean to cup, which knows a thing or two about making a good cup of coffee, it produces a great crema, which vanishes after about 1 minute, leaving a cup of moderately flavoursome, pale coffee. And yet, it has a strong, bitter aftertaste that hangs around. Curiously unsatisfying and edgy in all the wrong places. You live and learn, but I won't be repeating this.

Perhaps an acquired taste?
I don't want to fault the producer too harshly, because taste is a personal thing, and you're getting a kg of what is listed as 2-star Great Taste beans for a decent price. However, having tasted a wide variety of coffee beans, this might be my least favourite cup. Rather than waste the beans I've blended them with a plainer flavour and turned it into something more palatable, but I won't be buying them again. So, before buying these beans understand that they are quite polarising.

Bitter and bland
I can't seem to get a good flavour out of this bean no matter what I try. It always comes out lacking any depth and tastes quite washed out. If I try pushing the extraction more it just goes bitter. I won't finish the bag or buy again.

Stong Like Coffee
I like fresh coffee and I like it strong. Therefore these 'Ferraris Coffee Extra Strong Beans', espresso style is great. I love coffee and am even willing to go through a bit of the faff to get a great flavour. This 1KG bag of coffee is great as it is strong. With a decent grinder you get fresher coffee, I even sneakily grind a few days' worth and store it and it stays fresh. The brand does come in different strength, and I have to say that the medium organic version is slightly nicer, but more expensive. This coffee is designed for most coffee making machines and works fine in my coffee maker and a classic coffee plunger. The ground is darker and courser, making it a stronger flavour and this I like. The bag is large enough that you will be in coffee heaven for at least a few weeks. The price point may seem a little high, but it soon makes commercial sense when you think how much buying coffee from the cafe is or buying smaller bags. With the right equipment you should get a cafe level quality from these grounds.
