Silver Borne: Mercy Thompson: Book 5

Read in a day
Yep, it was that good. I took it to work with me and ended up reading the ending stuck in traffic on the way home. Patricia Briggs is a highly skilled wordsmith and her writing will keep you turning those pages till the end. A lot of authors by the time they get to the fifth book in a series have given up on the casual reader and write for their fans but Briggs is far better than that. The story grips you from the word go and plunges you straight into Mercy's world but all the way through she feeds the reader little titbits designed to fill you in with just enough back story to make sense to the casual reader and hopefully tempt them to go back to the start of the series. The vampires are missing from this book although they do get mentioned. This story is about the fae and the wolves, in particular the problems of Samuel, and both threads are beautifully interwoven. This is a book for readers of both sexes and the requirements of both are artfully met. There is just the right balance of relationship material to excitement and thankfully no lurid sex scenes. The violence is tempered and appropriate, the fae well researched and the characters believable. Like the previous reviewer; who's synopsis was so good that I didn't need to repeat it, I can't wait for the next one.

Supernatural beings makes for great reading
I'm a big fan of Mercy, the shap-shifting mechanic and the other regular characters in this series: among them, Adam, the Alpha wolf in the local werewolf pack and Samuel, a doctor and the ancient werewolf son of the Chief American werewolf. The setting, America trying to come to terms with the fact that there really are supernatural beings living next door, is well realized and clever. This latest installment sees the fey trying to gain possession of an ancient artifact of power which belongs to Mercedes friend Finn, who has been kidnapped and tortured to reveal its whereabouts: naturally, Mercedes has it. She has to rescue Finn, hide the artifact and try to save Samuel who has lost his will to live. Lots of werewolf politics, evil fey and derry doing. Since you wouldn't buy this book unless you were willing to suspend belief, you'll find it well worth the time. Patricia Briggs writes beautifully!

Silver troubles!
Trouble follows Mercy whatever she does. When chaos ensures after a bounty hunter arrived at her shop, she ends up losing her home when a member of the fae sets it on fire. With issues in the pack, she also struggles to understand her mate bond. Can she survive this latest batch of trouble without losing something more important? Reading about Mercy is like meeting up with an old friend and remembering the good times out weigh the bad!

great fantasy series
I bought these early books in the series in pre-kindle days but wanted to have them on my kindle so re bought them. they're a reasonable price. I've lots of books i'd love to have on kindle, i hope the US scheme to let readers but kindle versions at discount comes to UK!! Please Amazon :-) These are all really well writtne novels, full of action and advnture, characters that feel real, danger that feels genuine and capped off with the romnce between Adam and Marcy running through all the books. Definatley one for keepers and re reading - and i've just gone through the whole sereis again, along with the Aspen Creek spinoffs.

Or Mercy and the scary fae book
After the Mercy and Stefan vampire plotline of book 4, book 5 is more about the wolves as Mercy is more drawn into the life and rules of Adam's Pack and you learn a lot more about the different wolves in the Pack. Her past love Samuel also makes an appearance as Mercy is given a mysterious book of fae secrets that a lot of people seem to be after and Mercy and the Pack are in big danger. Lots of fights, drama and outwitting of various scary enemies plus the Samuel/Mercy story arc is neatly ended and there is more of Ben. Love these books so much!

Novelty
I read the first five Mercy Thompson books some years ago and decided that the plots were getting very similar so decided not to continue. I then recently read Cry Wolf, another book by Patricia Briggs, which mentioned Mercy so I decided to get the sixth book - Silver Borne. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to all fantasy fans who like shape shifters and the like. At The end of the book I decided to buy the next Mercy Thompson book to see what happens next.

Exhilarating read
I love this series by Patricia Briggs, the concept behind the Mercy Thompson books is so good they have every element from shapeshifters to vampires and the fae and the mix between them holds my attention completely. The fact that Mercy is a shifter and one of a kind and also has a certain kind of magic just makes the series so much more interesting and enjoyable. The storylines are fascinating and the characters engrossing together with the love interests and heroics I can thoroughly recommend these books.

Mercy and Adam sitting in a tree... K I S S I N G....
When I started reading Bone Crossed I was terrified that this series was going to go down hill, not because BC stunk, but because it seemed like it was the 'peak' of the series. I really haven't enjoyed the last few Anita Blake novels, and the last few MJD and Sookie Stackhouse had me just going 'ok if this series ended I'd be alright'. (If I'm in the minority cool, I'm glad you still like the series) But I have to say I was bound to be disappointed in my nervousness. Silver Borne just took a new direction, but one that kept the plot and characters interesting. Patricia Briggs has ways of introducing new characters and plot lines, then following through. Which isn't always true with other authors with long series. Many times new characters and plotlines just raise more questions, rather than enhancing the work. In Silver Borne we see what we've wanted to see since book one, Adam being a loving partner. We also see Samuel and his struggle with his long life, and losing who he had decided was his mate.Mercy, if you remember, has always been leery of the Fae (even her beloved Zee up to a point) and this book is no exception. The only problem is that she can't return it, and the Fae don't want the wrong people having control of it. Great. Now to top things off Adam is only being leniant so much in regards to her fully accepting the mate bond and everything that goes with it (like his pack) and Samuel is so unahappy that he tries to kill himself. Now I say try because turns out his wolf isn't ready to die, and now Mercy has to figure out if Samuel's life is forfeit (as a violent suicidal were) or is she can help him. Only problem is that Samuel has been alive and alone a long time. His 'recovery' is a bit quick, but perhaps Samuel's 'wolf' just helped it along as fast as he could. I'm really hoping that like Anna Samuel will get his own novel or novella. He deserves some happiness and completion.I completely agree with many others in regards to Stefan. It seems in previous books that Stefan was going to be a sort of love interest, or at least a love rival. Perhaps he will get his own story to in time. The only thing I can say is that I read the first four books before I hit this one, so again I was surprised by the continuity and progression of the plot... it was really good. I'm also glad that it showed a softer side to the couple. Yes there is no longer the crazy sexual/violent tension between Adam and Mercy, but love progresses in real life, why wouldn't if for Mercy? The only thing I can say is that I hope Adam got over his "Will Mercy ever leave me?" thing in the next book. It would be nice to have the two of them as partners and not just love mushed teens.;-)Look for the next book coming out..... oh next year... guess we have to wait again.... how about a novel about Samuel or Stefan to make the wait more bearable?
