Korean Grammar with Cat Memes: Korean Language Book for Beginners Paperback – October 19, 2017

Less cat memes than expected but the way things are explained is great even for complete beginners

Having recently begun learning Hangul and Korean I was interested in seeing this book since the look inside feature showed an appealing design.There is a short (perhaps too short) introduction to Hangul that everyone learning Korean really needs to learn - it is quite simple. Following from this are short chapters introducing various words and phrases, and showing how they fit into sentences using correct Korean grammar. All very simple, all straightforward.I did like the fact this author has given a lot of white space on almost every page. This means the eye isn't "blinded" by too much information at any one time and can focus on just small elements.What I didn't particularly like was the quality of the printing, especially the Hangul. This is almost always printed in bold using a point size not much larger than the English text. When using bold, and especially when printing what can sometimes be complex Hangul blocks, it is important to use a clear font with a large point size for readers to be able to see clearly. Korean books, for instance, do not use bold and do not use tiny point sizes.To be honest, the difficulty in quickly reading the Hangul and making out the characters in each complex block is my only complaint with this book. It does what it sets out to do, offer a Korean language book for beginners and concentrates on correct grammar. I would have liked to have seen a downloadable audio file containing correct pronunciations of all the words/phrases. I understand the author has an online presence on YouTube so perhaps I will find what I want there.As I reached the end of this review I returned to the Amazon sales page and checked the look inside feature for the Kindle version. I have to say that, on my screen at least (and I know my iPad will be even better), the text is much clearer and easier to read. I am wondering now if I should have bought the Kindle version rather than the paperback - but customers will have to make that decision for themselves. I thought a "real" book that I could have open on my desk would be more useful but, as I said, I think I would have preferred the Kindle version.At £9.95 at the time of this review, it is a good price for a decent book and is very useful for learners. Whilst I have (late) decided the Kindle version displayed on a good screen would be easier to read, that is only my personal opinion and the book itself is decent.

I adore how it is broken into logical Question/Answer style, for me it's perfect, however I have been learning Hangeul Audio wise for just over a year now.I do advise, that although this says beginner, you do it either with MK on YouTube or use a language app (I've found Memrise particularly awesome with learning JDM/formal korean). As he says in this very book, you can learn to read and write it later. I particularly found how he broke down JDM (formal) and BM (Casual) helpful, its definitely aided me more in reading being able to define that if it ends with the sound Yoh or Dah, it's most likely formal, therefore okay to use towards strangers,elders and peers.I love Korean culture and the fact that he gives you a simple yet non-patronising run down of what you need is incredibly helpful, particularly when you've words that begin with a tongue twister.Overall, if you're serious about learning Korean, not just because of Idols or dramas or Kpop, but to be able to immerse yourself more when you go, like learning or want to understand lyrics more, I whole heartedly advise to use this book as a reference for grammar. Nevermind the fact I can't wait to surprise random people by being polite in Korean xDI'm getting the Korean Words WITH cat Memes next!
