Strange conductivity
Question:I have 2 pieces of ITO ( indium tin oxide) glass -2 inches x 2 in. - and intend to use them as electrodes ( like 2 parallel plates in a capacitor) to test the electrical conductivity of a “film under test” separating them. Without any separation, when I touch the edge of one plate to the other I get conduction. However, if I put the 2 ITO face to face (even with pressure) there is no conduction. Why?Does AZO ( aluminum zinc oxide) act this way?Given this characteristic I am concerned that a thin film I am testing may appear to be an insulator because of the “contact resistance” with ITO.I am using ITO because my film being tested is only 10 microns thick, so the electrodes have to be smooth and flat to avoid false contact between the electrodes. Also ITO avoids the growth of nanowires, possible if gold or silver were used. I ensure the spacing with kapton film.Other recommendations for flat electrodes that I can buy are welcome. Making copper that flat and smooth is beyond my skill!
