A beautiful and compassionate book for anyone coping with loss
I'm not quite sure how I stumbled across this book: perhaps it was one of those happy 'coincidences' for which I am deeply grateful.Having recently lost my partner of 28 years, I have been reading many books on grief and I think I can honestly say this is the one that means most to me. Perhaps it is because Guite explores some truly beautiful and compassionate poems, providing illuminating and insightful commentary on each, relating the poem to the reader's own experience of grief. I am in awe of Guite's writing: it somehow reaches out and touches the heart. He acknowledges that there are no easy answers to the horrible pain of bereavement; but I have found that his - and his poets' - depth of understanding and compassion is truly healing. A book to treasure and to give to anyone who finds themselves facing loss and in need of hope.

Flowery verse and for bereaved
I did not enjoy or really understand any of the poems. Many had a religious twist. I hoped to get some comfort but I’m afraid I didn’t so would not recommend.

An excellent book!
Following a recent bereavement I found the collection of poems interesting and helpful. The background notes for each poem were a key feature and were very informative. I particularly enjoyed the work of some of the more modern poets.
