Shakespeare: A Book of Quotations (Dover Thrift Editions: Speeches/Quotes)

The world's mine oyster
Recently I have bought several books of quotations by some of the best minds of all time. Dover editions has several, for example Mark Twain, and Oscar Wilde among others. This particular one has the advantage of being inexpensive, and does contain many great quotations I don't recall reading before, I feel I must mention two of my favorites for you to consider. My favorite by far, and I think unbeatable is Shakespeare's Wordcraft (Softcover) , which breaks down Shakespeare's quotations down into patterns, and shows he crafted many of these quotes, and how you too can craft quotations of similar brilliance. It does not use fancy jargon or explanations. Mostly, it shows patterns such as reverberations, reversals, repetitions, and then list quotes, and as you read you can discern what is happening, it's really eye opening.Another one, the Kindle version William Shakespeare Complete Works Ultimate Collection: 213 Plays, Poems, Sonnets, Poetry including the 16 rare, hard-to-get Apocryphal Plays PLUS Annotations, Commentaries of Works, Full Biography , on Kindle. For a ridiculously modest price you have Shakespeare's complete works. If you don't already have Kindle, you can download a Kindle app for your computer here on Amazon, and experience it that way. With that you have a complete Shakespeare database so if you want to look up an obscure quote like; green eyed monster, time out of joint, or beetle oer the base, you can find every reference even if the words are not side by side. If you wish to look up a common structure like neither..nor, it will show you every place where both these words appeared. This search feature beats most quote sites. The advantage of this book is that it presents quotations without you having to look for the unknown jewel. I read many good quotations I do not recall reading before. If it was a longer book, it's about 64, and included some of the soliloquys more completely I would probably give it five stars. I realise though that a soliloquy goes slightly beyond the usual scope of a quotation, so maybe it's unrealistic on my part to impose this expectation.Like all quote books it distils the essence from all his works, saving you the time of diving through all his plays to find the particular pearls, showing you a selection of some of the very best quotes by the master wordsmith of all time. It's well worth it for how little you pay, and how much you can get out of it.I think you will enjoy it, and I hope you found this review helpful.

Not a disappointment for me
I feel eerily uncomfortable reviewing an icon as a writer myself. The book's contents are superbly written and extremely extraordinary to all whom adore Shakespeare. I dare not speak against anything ever written by this man but I can say as a writer on Amazon, I only hope to be half as great as he.

Not exhaustive, but still a pleasure
This is by far not an exhaustive book of Shakespearean quotations, and probably one of the shortest. Quotes are organized by categories such as on love, on death, etc. It is only about 57 pages total, so as one can imagine it is not exactly brimming with quotations. That being said, the quotes in this book are all excellent. While this may not be great for referencing any quote you may imagine, it is good to have as an introduction to them, or just as a quick read for some incite and wisdom from one of the greatest play-writes of the English language. The price is also good, I should add. I believe, upon purchase, I payed about $2.30 USD for the Kindle edition. As a summary, I recommend purchasing this. As I wrote previously, this book does not have many quotes (what do you expect, it's barely over 50 pages), so this would not be for the die-hard follower of Shakespeare, but it's nice to have for a beginner or someone looking for a nice introduction.

Excellent
The quotes are broken out in easy to understand categories. As a Shakespeare buff, I found this book (kindle) to be a nice tool to quickly remind me of the Bard's best lines. You will be amazed at how many of these quotes are actually used to this day to describe a situation or as outright sayings. Who first said "Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them"? Not some WWW II General or a former president as are sometime credited, but William Shakespeare!

A wonderful resource for authors and students
As an author who oftentimes uses epigraphs in modern stories, these Dover Thrift books make verifying and authenticating quotes simple, in record time. Even without rereading the old, familiar tales, they're well worth the money. For everyone else, it's useful whenever you want to demonstrate how unfamiliar anyone else is when they misquote famous Shakespearean lines. Plus, who doesn't appreciate a decent sonnet during dark times?

A great and tiny treat!
I'm a big Shakespeare lover, and I own two complete different volumes of his works. But this is just a treat for myself as for my friends who sometimes get curious and take it off of my coffee table..It's small, really cheap (it cannot get any cheaper without becoming literally for free), and it shows some of Shakespeare's most recognizable and memorable quotes. Although, there are no annotations or explanations but who needs them - this is all about the quotes. Very understandable even for a beginner Shakespearian..I also love the order of the quotes - according to the character and subject rather than by chronological works order.

Affordable Classics
I purchased about 7 books from this publisher. Very affordable way to read the classics. Excellent quality for the price, very happy with my purchases.

Gwfarm reviews Shakespeare
This book is almost a reference document providing readily accessible quotes for multiple occasions. As I reviewed them, my mind went back to my formative years when I learned many of them in my academic studies. I will continue to use this book and the quotations in it to spice up my writing and presentations.

Still relevant
The bard's understanding of the human condition is amazing and these quotations are as relevant today as they were in his time.

Too thin
Would have been a nice book but it’s only about ten pages!
