New age-y and a bit wyrd
I find it a bit of a give away when I pick up a book and there is no bibliography, no references and no recommendations. I can't honestly tell where half the ideas in the book come from. There is a lot of talk about palaeolithic hunters striding across the tundra and doing this and that, and thinking this and that, of which we know very little about as they are all dead. How can you possibly make suppositions about the thought processes of a group of people who we only know by their bones and cave paintings. As there are no references, I can't see where the evidence comes from for the writer's ideas. The etymology of words discussed is a bit questionable, people do whole degrees in this in the UK, just because the words dot and dog sound the same doesn't mean they have similar meaning. If this is a 'channeled' book - then that needs to be made very clear to the reader, and if it is a psychological book about thought processes, then it needs to be referenced to psychology and not pseudo-psychology. I found some of the meanings of the runes quite misleading and references to Norse myth inaccurate. As in the confusion of elk; in Europe an elk is what North American dwellers call a moose, it has, and never has been any type of deer. I prefer to read books about runic shamanism by people who clearly have the Germanic languages at their finger tips and reference their writing ie works by Jan Fries and Freya Aswynn. And would recommend Sweyn Plowright's down to earth guide for people starting out.

Breve pero con información de calidad.
Información sólida y clara tras la exposición de la cual se ve claramente mucha investigación. Además me gusta este autor porque es muy real y directo.

Excellent & very original
A very interesting look at the possible use of runes as an initiation ritual. Very well presented and written. I've read a lot of books on runes and this was a very original theory. No new age fluff or pieced together nonsense from different cultures. The authors explanation of each rune was very interesting. If you are interested in runes or Germanic culture in general this (or Mr Denney's other books) are worth reading

Great addition to my library
This book is exactly what I was hoping for. Over a year ago, I was introduced to the Seidr Norse tradition at a shamanic training. It was like coming home to my ancestors. Since then I have heard the whispers to study the Runes and have been searching for books that speak to me in the same way. Michael could be hearing my ancestors. His knowledge of Germanic history seems to be well researched. I appreciate the honesty when he clearly owns his "opinion" versus historical fact. I find myself agreeing with him. Because so much of history is written by the winners i feel in some way, Michael is giving voice to the conquered. I also find his writing enjoyable. It's as if he is in the room speaking to me. I have been walking the Shamanic path for several years now. Michael's books will be added to my library.

Brings the Runes and Their Spiritual Context to Life
Mr. Denney's Rune Shamanism is a highly valuable and insightful introduction to the Runes and the spiritual context they exist within: Ancient Germanic Spirituality. Academic sources approach the Runes, and Germanic Spirituality from a dry, theoretical, and mostly lifeless perspective. Mr. Denney brings these subjects to life. He also offers an unique perspective on the cultural and historical context of the Runes. He cites the cultural observations of the Germanic peoples made by the ancient Roman historian Tacitus. Most importantly, Mr. Denney shows us the mostly forgotten method of Galdor. Galdor is a way to chant and meditate on the Runes in order to intuit further insights on them and to reflect on the circumstances within our lives. This practice also helps us to make changes within our Subconscious and Unconscious minds which speak the language of images and symbols, rather than words. I highly recommend this book.
