The Arrival Of A Bold New Jazz Master!
The year 1994 would turn out to be a banner year for jazz debut albums, and alongside Brad Mehldau, David Sanchez, Junko Onishi, Chris Walden, Nicholas Payton and Badi Assad, another bright and very important new music force had made a exclusive mark on the music itself. J.C. On The Set signaled the arrival of multi-reeds giant James Carter as his rise to international fame have won him the critical praise and success as his debut CD made him become hailed as one of the most highly ambitious jazz musicians in 70 plus years. Containing mostly first-time original compositions written by Carter, the enlightened track set starts off on the high octane title track where it procede in full force on Baby Girl Blues, the adventurous Blues For A Nomadic Princess, Lunatic, and superb versions of classic jazz standards, such as Duke Ellington’s Caravan and Sun Ra’s Hour Of Parting. As a proud fixture of the Detroit jazz circuit, Carter had achieved plenty of experience during his five-year rise that included his stint as session musician in bands headed by Geri Allen, Lester Bowie and Julius Hemphill before becom- ing a star in his right. So here it is, coming towards us with swagger and strut, a gleeful cry, an expansive roar, creative virtuosity, and some tender intimidations, its J.C. On The Set and it’s coming at you the next time around. Now here is another great jazz classic that the MP3 department needs to bring in it'sdepartment, because it will not only bring more exposure but could make it a greaterseller as am MP3 album. So let's get Amazon.com to present an MP3 album editionof this landmark debut jazz classic!

This dude is amazing!
One of the best modern jazz discs out there. His version of 'Caravan' is my favorite. This dude is amazing; he really knows how to convey his musical imagination.

JC On The Set.
James Carter's debut album from 1993 is unsurprisingly an impressive and very satisfying showcase of his talents.A quartet grouping, the leader plays alto/tenor/baritone saxes with Craig Taborn on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass and Tani Tabbal on drums. There's a fair bit of swagger on show here; Carter is a formidable technician and a fine exponent of all the instruments he plays, so it's no wonder he demonstrates his prowess – perhaps a little excessively – but it's hugely enjoyable to hear him cut loose on some of the tracks here.A mix of standards and some original pieces by Carter, it's a fine debut and a ripping set of good post-bop jazz. The album has a playing time of 65.27 minutes.Amazon have now stopped providing sound samples – a stupid and extremely inconvenient move for all prospective purchasers – I suggest searching YouTube or another music website for tracks from the album.
