Reviewed for its Medieval Content - I Love Medieval Era Scenes
Being Human is definitely an anomaly for a movie that touches on medieval life. Most medieval-era movies are about the plague, bloody battles, or bloody battles in a plague-ridden area. In comparison, Being Human with Robin Williams is slow, thoughtful, and looks at how people lived. This is actually a movie about five different time periods. Robin Williams starts out in prehistoric days, living in a cave with his wife and two kids. Then he's a Roman-era slave. Then he's a medieval crusader returning home. Next he's a Renaissance man who is shipwrecked. Finally he's a modern day man. It's sort of like he's being reincarnated, although of course he doesn't know that. All he knows, in each life, is that he's struggling with issues of family, home, children, and responsibility. So, for example, in the first one he fails completely. His wife and kids are stolen away by raiders, and while he eventually tries to get them back, he isn't able to. He has to watch, sadly, as they are taken from him. In the very last one, he'd been an absent father after a divorce. He's tentatively trying to reconnect with his kids and rebuild a relationship with them. The medieval scenes fall between the two. He's been off at the crusades, which was fairly common for men in this time period. His wife and kids are home waiting for him to return. But along the way he falls for a French woman even though the two can't talk to each other. He sleeps with her and goes back with her to her house. He realizes she's a widow - she has her mother and a young child living with her. The house is warm, clean, everything he could hope for. And he's tempted. But at last he says no. As much as it would be lovely, he has his actual wife and kids to get back home to. They are waiting for him.The medieval scenes are fairly well done. The style of house, the clothing, all of it fits reasonably well with this era. There are minor issues - at this time period the people wouldn't have had plates to eat off of. Food would be served on a platter and then the people would use old crusts of bowled bread to eat the food from. Nothing to wash up afterwards :).So a good movie, slow, but interesting. The use of recurring themes across the timelines is fun, and the message that we all face the same sorts of hardships no matter what era we live in is fairly poignant. There's nothing new under the sun.

Reincarnation...
That's what the movie is about. It's very deep, but I agree with another reviewer that it is not for the average movie watcher. I first saw it way back when it was released in the theaters. It changed my life. After watching this movie, I made some major life changes. It helped me to see human life in the context of forever, instead of the way most people see it (very finite). Only some people will get it. So if you find that you like thinky movies or movies that aren't generally well-received, you can watch this film. Whether or not you believe in reincarnation at all or as it's presented here, I think it can still offer one a perspective on life as a time of learning. It can help a person remember not to beat oneself up too badly when mistakes have been made, it's all a learning process. Just try to do better next time (next time you have the same choice or next lifetime, if you believe in reincarnation). If you like Oscar-winning films & directors, better skip this one. It is not for the mainstream audience.UPDATE: I rewatched this movie today. I stand by what I said earlier: Some people will get it (and some won't). I absolutely love this movie! I wish I could locate and speak to the writer and director Bill Forsyth. There just aren't words to express my adoration. If you're looking for some guidance as to what the movie is about and whether you'd like to take the gamble, look up Being Human (1994) on wikipedia. It will tell you in plain English what the movie is about. You still have to watch it to experience it though. The pace is slow and subdued and you must be an insightful person to understand the full meaning of this film. I only wish I could get a hold of the director's cut.

Short and Sweet
Firstly, I would like to start this review by paying respect to Robin Williams. The world hasn't been the same without him.I've seen a lot of complaints about this film after watching it that the stories seem forcibly intertwined and feel a bit forced. My question is this - did we read the description of the same movie? Being Human stars Robin Williams; Williams plays multiple different roles throughout this film. More specifically, this films moves through in exclusively short - story style, with each seperate story being introduced and transitioned in to by an unnamed narrator.First of all, let's talk about how unque this particular plot is in the first place. We know from, the very beginning that It's likely none of these "stories" will have any real character development due to how short each one is - and inspite of this the audience can feel comfortable knowing and seeing so little because we are already literally TOLD to expect a small collection of short stories. Despite the length of each story we are still exposed to a large variety of settings and subsequently characters that Williams nails without trying (and, are we surprised?).I decided from the very beginning that by the time this was finished I wanted to infer what the director's goals were in making this.My conclusions are as follows:1) Although each character is in a largely different setting, each one deals with issues that are similar - the concepts of justice, belonging, and courage being the ones that first come to mind. This doesn't necessarily make any of the stories come "full circle" in a way by any means, but it's a powerful testimony to the fact that despite our differences, we are all still very much alike in our own cores and spirit.2) Each character in these stories have a particular problem they are dealing with, and these problems in some way relate directly to the setting. In other words, the struggles are as individualized as the various personas portrayed. That leads me to my second guess about the motivation in making this: It provides what is almost implied commentary regarding perspective, privilege, and remaining culturally relative (and the like) when commenting on the challenges others may be facing in their day-to-day lives. As I said previously, none of these stories are really "resolved", and in some ways it's begging the audience to fill in the blanks and imagine what could happen next. This would usually be an annoyance to me, but the story-telling format makes this easy to accept (and, it goes without saying, is another way the director encourages others to remain open minded and compassionate when dealing wirh the plight of others). If I had a critism, it would be that I thought some of the transactions between stories could be smoother technically speaking; there ciule have been a slow fade in/out (so, Williams and scenery would be simultaneously changing as the story does) or even a slow pan/out on Williams face would been just fine. It certainly isn't a deal-breaker, but is just my two cents when it comes down to it.If you like this movie for anything, it's an excellent tool for engaging others and initiating conversations about problem-solving and the like. Thanks again to Robin Williams for blessing us with his talent. ❤I would recommend!

A Breathe Of Fresh Air
This film is a comedy/fantasy/drama all in one. It is also one of Robin Williams's rare gems. Once in a while he does a film that goes straight to DVD, is made for TV, or one that is only played in a select few theatres.......this film was one of them. The film is about a story that's about a story. This may confuse you at first, but the viewer will soon start to understand how important this theme is to what makes this movie so delightful.Williams plays a man named Hector, who is the main character of the film. The film takes you through different periods in time throughout human history, from the cave-man period right up to modern day. In each period we are shown that man is not as complex as one may think and that in the end we all have the same natural goals and desires for survival on this planet called earth. The main theme of the film is survival as human beings, and how we must rely on eachother to achieve it. The film shows us that Love, family, inner conflict, bravery, and courage are all essential aspects of "Being Human".If you are looking for an all around "Feel Good" kind of movie with an excellent cast line-up including Wiliam H. Macey, Ewan McGregor, and John Tuturo, then I highly recommend "Being Human"This movie definitely goes onto my personal list of favorites.

I am glad that someone else likes this film
This is one of my favourite films. It gets slated generally in reviews. I think it is a pretty clever concept, following the five lives of one man through history and showing that basically things don't change, that the song remains the same. Maybe I am just a bit sentimental, but I love the end story with Robin Williams as the happless father connecting with his estranged children.Likewise the opening "act" set on the west coast of Scotland, without any recognisable language is superbly done, showing us what it might have been like to have been suddenly put upon by a viking invasion.
