The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya

What I love about each book in the Haruhi series is that it places extraordinary people and epic events in the confines of ordinary slice of life settings rather than just have an epic battle in space or whatever.A new student council president becomes Haruhi's rival threatening to disband the literature club. In order to stop that, the gang has to each write stories. The stories each of them write definitely conveys their character. Nagato's story was the most interesting. She's always reading books and this is the first time she tried to write a story. This first half of the book is very funny.In the second half of the book, they are investigating what is happening with the neighborhood pets getting scared and sick. They end up trying to do an exorcism. There's already time travelers, aliens, and espers.. so why not throw in some evil spirits as well haha. Very fun second half of the book story.If you love any of the past books in the series or the anime, then this should definitely be your cup of tea.I always look forward to a new haruhi book in the series. They're all growing up and I'm very interested to know where they all go from here.

As is the case with most of the Haruhi series, this is a great work! It's so funny from start to finish, and the characters are heartening and deceptively deep as always.Trying to figure out why "JJ"/Rousseau avoids a river is another everyday adventure that the SOS Brigade finds itself in. Kyon's commentary is perfect high schoolish. It has lazy, self serving moments, as well as serious and forward looking moments.It's another great entry in the series. All fans of an interesting story will enjoy! Branch out and try a new book!

The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya is the eighth installment in the sometimes brilliant, but often meandering, franchise. The series is strongest when it focuses on a singular plot, thus allowing its rich concepts to coalesce into engaging, unforgettable tales. It's not surprising, then, that books one, four, and seven are the best of the bunch, as their single, self-contained stories provide enough sharp surprises and enticing revelations to push the series' entire narrative forward. Sadly, Indignation is yet another short story collection, providing two merely competent, middling reads and not much more.The first, "Editor in Chief, Full Speed Ahead," sees the gang forced to put together a literary magazine lest they be disbanded by the student council (therefore losing the Literature Room in which they concoct their shenanigans). It begins promising enough, with a couple of interesting, albeit minor, revelations about certain characters, and the short stories written by Asahina and Nagato are both entertaining reads (sadly, Haruhi provides nothing). But the climax involving Kyon's own entry--a romance story that might just provide the impetus he and Haruhi need to advance their own relationship--falls flat with an inconsequential payoff that leaves the status quo essentially unchanged.The second story, "Wandering Shadow," has a similar problem, but in reverse--it starts slowly with a mundane tale that slowly becomes more interesting by its second half. And while the conclusion is neither bombastic or otherwise enlightening, it does lay groundwork for some potentially significant developments in the upcoming books.Uninspired plotting aside, the translation is similar to the last couple of entries--competent but wordy. To be fair, the wordiness is likely the original author's fault, but either way, writing principles such as "show, don't tell" and "less is more" don't always seem to apply here. At least, thanks to the translator, it's usually clear when Kyon is either internalizing or speaking out loud. This ambiguity was an ongoing nuisance early in the series.Nonetheless, the truly great news is that, starting in the next book, a much more sophisticated narrative will begin to unfold for Kyon and his friends--one that will have tremendous effects on the entire cast and their universe. And right now, a serious, shattering threat is exactly what this staid series needs to recapture the magic of its first, most ingenious entry.

I don't know where to put this, I'm gonna put it here instead. I received a slightly different book, a bit smaller than what is shown; a book without the frills in the right side. I like the said frills and also for the sake of formality from my other Haruhi books. are there 2 versions of the book? I hope this won't be the case for my other Haruhi order

I've been following the Haruhi Suzumiya series for years, and eagerly await the English language release of each new volume. The translator does a positively amazing job.

'The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya' is the eighth instalment of the Haruhi Suzumiya series of light novels and contains two short stories: 'Editor in Chief, Full Speed Ahead!' and 'Wandering Shadow'.'Editor in Chief, Full Speed Ahead!' is an interesting story that sees the North High Student Council finely attempt to bring an end to the SOS Brigade. To do this the Student Council plan to disband the Literature Club unless it can produce a publication of essays and stories. This is a good story that was enjoyable to read and the stories that Asahina, Nagato and Kyon produce for the newsletter are all good. Asahina's fairy tale is pretty funny drawing on a number of existing stories and Kyon's story from his past is interesting. Nagato's three Untitled stories however are my favourite as they are very cryptic and interesting, and suit Nagato perfectly. The story also finely introduces the Student Council and reveals a little about Emiri Kimidori.The second part of this book, 'Wandering Shadow', is an intriguing story that sees the SOS Brigade investigates why a classmate's dog is refusing to follow its usual path when on a walk. This is a very good story that has some interesting moments and allows Nagato to do what she does best once again. The story also has some very interesting philosophical moments and a few nice but minor character moments for Haruhi.While both of the stories in 'The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya' are very good, 'Wandering Shadow' just about comes out better. Both of the stories are as easy to read and well written as the rest of the books in the series. Overall this was a very enjoyable read and well worth a full five stars.

And so, at the eighth book in the series we finally find someone providing a legitimate threat to the existance of the SOS brigade who isn't psychotic or an alien. Or both.Yes that's right people, the student council is making their move against the brigade. And with this simple setup the author manages to create a story that gives some significant insight into the various characters through the medium of their writings. Mikuru produces a beleagured fairy tale that doesn't seem to know what to do with itself, Nagato creates an incomprehensible, Lovecraft-esque piece and so on. Speaking of Yuki, she actually gets some more development here, which is always good for everyone's favourite alien.And then the second half of the book. In my opinion, it's just as good as the first half, btu for seperate reasons. The tale of a doggy excorcism may seem odd at first, but it is told completely seriously, and brings up some interesting questions and develops the characters a tad more, including showing Koizumi's and talent for investigating which went into creating the mystery scenarios of earlier books.So with that brief summary of things, I have this to say: If you've read this far in the series already, don't stop now, this entry is on form and brilliant, with laughs and seriousness all thrown in as always. A great read from a great series, and now I'm just waiting for the next one to be translated.

The writing is superb, and generally I found myself enjoying the adventures of the SOS Brigade as much as I did during the previous novels. Toppy tip.
