The Traditional Colors of Japan (Japanese Edition)

"The Traditional Colors of Japan" is a companion to "Traditional Japanese Color Palette." It has beautiful photographs of the fine and applied arts, armor and clothing, landscapes, and trees and flowers in bloom. This book identifies 250 colors and provides a numbered index of them, arranged chromatically, at the conclusion of the book. Although the texts describing the photographs are entirely in Japanese, English terms appear for each of the colors highlighted. To give you a sense of the amount of English presented in this manner, here are two examples: "Poppy Red: While poppies may have white, yellow, or purple flowers, the color refers to flowers of a strong red with a hint of orange." "Cactus: a yellow-green with a hint of gray." At the end of the book are two illustrations based on Munsell color codes, but all of the identifying data other than numerics are in Japanese.

Stunning book - particularly suited to anyone with an interest in design and who is at an upper intermediate or higher level of Japanese. The descriptions for each colour are poetic, and while the kanji and general language are advanced, the sentences are clear and each colour entry is very short. Really recommended for anyone with an interest in design/form/colour who is wanting challenge level Japanese.

Only japanese can make such a book: hundreds and hundreds of slightly different colours, each one with its name, each one illustrated with flowers, or robes, or skies. Chapeau.
