Q: Would this be suitable for a mandolin?

I personally think the mandolins fit better in a guitar stand

Q: Does 16" viola fit as well?

I bought it for my full size violin, but I have played viola before, and I am pretty sure it will fit. It is expandable and you can adjust it. I really recommend this little gadget! I recently traveled to Brazil to play in an orchestra there and we had concerts and this saved me from having to hold my violin all through rehearsals. And I also love it in order to store my violin when Im not using it. It holds it and also works as decoration 😉
