A Book For The Ages
Agree or disagree with Tocqueville, this is a tour de force for the ages. If nothing else, it demonstrates, just as all great works demonstrate, nothing changes. It's uncanny. It's amazing. It's humbling. He is perspicacious, prescient, and, LOL, wordy. This is a must read for every red blooded American who has the time, energy, interest, and commitment to learn more about who we are as a people. It is amazingly all-encompassing, and relevant. I guarantee, even if you don't agree with his assertions, they will provoke high level thoughts

Old but refreshing
Obviously, this is a very old book. And since the writing America was matured as a country and mixed culture. But Tocqueville's insight to the unique nature of America, the people, and how the country was formed and beginning to take shape is insightful. It's a refreshing look at the principals of early Americans and the struggles that existed then but many feel are new today. Even then the media shaped public policy. For some politics were more important than values. But even Tocqueville recognized the difference 150 years ago. It's a great book.

The copy I received (used) was in excellent condition. I really like the Everyman's Library series from Knopf. It has a solid introduction and the reprint quality is excellent. How can one not be interested in Tocqueville's observations? He clearly focuses on the weakness in American democracy toward mob rule. At the same time, even back in the era leading up to their version of Donal Trump (Andrew Jackson) he sees the inherent decency of Americans. It is reassuring to read at a time when American governmental institutions will be tested.

I was a little disappointed, but the interior of the book was perfect
The description stated that the book was new, but when I received it there were several marks on the red cloth cover. I guess I was expecting a brand new looking book. I was a little disappointed, but the interior of the book was perfect.

A must-read for those seeking to understand what is happening in the US. One of the most important books I've ever read.
This should be required reading in schools, it is that informative. De Tocqueville was a prophetic man. His understanding of the advantages and pitfalls of Democracy are a great help in understanding the bizarre politics that plague the US and subsequently, the rest of the world at the present time. His writing will always be an important piece of history.

Tocqueville's great book, Democracy In America
Tocqueville went into great detailed how the young domocracy functioned starting how government functioned in the northern and southern states. The 111 chapters is a classic. Every high school student should be required reading. I know it's not possible, there is not enough school hours to read those four volumes and learn all the other subjects.

It's as if he were writing to us in 2012!
A very well written account of the American experiment in democracy, particularly of why it worked in America and not in other countries. He writes to educated men in Europe about what he sees in America in the 1830s, and because of this it seems as if he were writing to the current reader of today in finest detail of what he observes in the successful American democracy that continues to grow.

Democracy in America
This is an extremely important book on the history of democracy anywhere. However, if I may be allowed one comment on this classic on democracy; How can one speak of democracy in America in 1835 when this book was published AND NEVER SET FOOT IN THE CRADLE OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY, Virginia? It is not my intention to insult this great work of literature, nor that great nation it is written about. However, of the founding fathers of America, four (4) of your first five (5) Presidents were chosen from Virginia. Even your great second President, John Adams, knew that democracy in America was doomed without Virginia and he knew it was even more doomed to failure without two of Virginia's greatest, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. This is truly a great classic and we can all learn about democracy, but one cannot claim to be an authority on democracy in America in 1835 without knowning the Southern states of America and the vital role their people played in the creation of democracy in America. Having said that, this is a very important classic on democracy, both its virtues and its vices. I urge everyone to read it and fully understand what is happening to democracy worldwide today.
