These are so great for emerging readers
These are so great for emerging readers. This is the first series my son has ever read by himself. He usually reads them in less than one day (can't get him to put them down, which is just not even really a problem is it?). They are the perfect series for him to start on his own too, because there are questions in the back, I can ask him when he is through reading, to make sure he is comprehending what he is reading. So thankful for this writer!

Book Review
{My thoughts} – In the last book we learned that the Dragon Masters had a visitor. Her name was Mina and she is a Dragon Master from the Far North Kingdom. She had come asking for their help to defeat a Ice Giant. She said that they needed a Fire Dragon to defeat the Ice Giant. This came as bad news to Griffith and the remaining Dragon Masters. Rori the Dragon Master to the only Fire Dragon they had had run off with Eko and Neru. They decided that they would have to locate them and see if they could talk Rori into coming back to help them, help Mina. Mina went with them and they were able to get Rori to help. When they got to the Far North Kingdom they learned they were in for more then they’d thought. There was so much ice everywhere, and it was so cold. Rori wanted to use her Dragon to melt all the ice, even the ice on the people. She didn’t think that she could cause a bunch of harm. Ana had her Sun Dragon use her sunlight to melt the ice off as many as she could during the battle. The Ice Giant was using Mina’s Dragon to battle them. Once they got control of Mina’s Dragon back the battle went much smoother. They were able to do a lot by working together as a group. They just needed to play up to the strengths of each Dragon. This helped them in the end.Towards the end of the book Griffith was told by King Roland that he was going to be replaced. But then Mina dropped a letter from the air for King Roland from her King. It changed the Kings mind. The best thing that came out of it is that Rori decided to stay and train with her friends, instead of going back to be with Eko.I look forward to continuing this story in the next book!

This series is one of the best for beginning readers - both boys AND girls
This series is one of the best for beginning readers - both boys AND girls. The story is about four Dragon Masters (new ones join the team from time to time), who go have to solve all kinds of mysteries and experience adventures. My son started reading these books at the end of kindergarten. He is in third grade now and still cannot wait for the newest book of this series to be published.

Disappointment in the New Illustrator and the Attitude of Some Characters - Cost This Book a Star ...
Tracey West introduces some new characters and a new dragon in her latest Dragon Masters book, “Chill of the Ice Dragon”. Mina, a Dragon Master from the Far North Lands, appears at King Roland’s castle seeking help. Mina’s wizard and dragon trainer, Hulda, is not strong enough to overcome either Vasty nor to recover Frost, Mina’s dragon Vasty now controls. The five Dragon Masters and the Wizard Griffith agree to assist her in rescuing King Lars and his court; the Ice Giant Vasty has frozen them all into blocks of ice. After convincing Rori – and her Fire Dragon, Vulcan - to join in the adventure, the seven young Dragon Masters transport to the Far North Kingdom. The battle against Vasty is exciting and the conclusion will satisfy fans of the Dragon Masters.Short chapters make this book a manageable book for readers who are just delving into chapter books. The simple vocabulary makes “Chill of the Dragon” an enjoyable book for young readers. However, I found the repeated use of “yeah” instead of “yes” somewhat annoying. The less complex structure of the narrative allows young readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while reading the story without making them feel as if they are reading a “baby book”. The subject matter of wizards and dragons fascinate my grandson; he loves the Dragon Master series even though he is rapidly outgrowing its level of difficulty. On a positive note, the series has piqued his interest in dragons and mythical creatures.“Chill of the Ice Dragon” no longer features Damien Jones’ black-and-white illustrations. His drawings, unlike the simplistic drawings in some other children’s books, these have depth, perspective, and dimension. Instead, Nina DePolonia provides illustrations that are less detailed; have less depth and dimension; and are not as impactful as Jones’ work. While children, who may have advanced to having chapter books read aloud to them at bedtime but who still want pictures to accompany the story, may find DePolonia’s work appealing, I prefer that even children’s books feature quality artwork. Nevertheless, I appreciate that Tracey West has decided to include illustrations throughout the book.As exciting and engaging as other books in this series, the story is enjoyable for both new readers and as a read-aloud for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Involving both magic dragons and diverse, multi-ethnic children who are learning to become Dragon Masters, the stories stress the importance of following instructions – in the case of the young Dragon Masters, those of their Wizard mentor Griffith - and cooperating with one another to accomplish a goal. Rori’s and Mina’s confrontational and self-important attitudes were not appealing and did not comport with the overall positive message of the book.If you are looking for a series of books that will interest early readers, particularly boys, you will want to look at the Dragon Master series. In order to fully enjoy “Chill of the Dragon”, your young reader should read the previous books in the series so they have some knowledge of the impetus for events in this book. Tracey West’s books are a wonderful way to encourage young readers. They are fun to read, contain enough fantasy and magic to appeal to children, and teach some good life lessons about cooperation, the importance of listening to and of understanding others.

Our kids LOVE the Dragon Master's book series
We needed a good "first chapter" series with lots of pictures as for bedtime routine as picture books just became rather expensive. So I searched the internet and came across the recommendation for Scholastic's Dragon Masters book series. They LOVE all the characters/dragons in the books and love guessing what each person can do and what powers the dragons have.Whenever possible we use the Kindle edition and broadcast it to our TV via our Amazon Firebox (via wireless projection) so that everyone can see the text and the pictures. Unfortunately not all the books are available for Amazon Kindle, so some books we had to buy as hard paper and we are running out of space in our bookshelves as we have sooo many books, so we prefer electronic copies. Electronic copies also allow us to share it onto their Amazon Fire tablets for kids.Again, LOVED by all of our kids and we have different ages and grasp of the world. Unfortuantely we have read ALL the books available and now have to wait until March 2021 until the next book comes out.
