I have been hooked on this album since it first came out, and after over 30 years, Chrome is still, in my mind, one of the most influential and groundbreaking bands to ever record. Helios Creed's guitar style is distinctive, with many attempting to copy him, but most never succeeding. The mix of psychedelic and punk attributes give the music a trippy, yet dangerous feel, with the over-processed vocals, and somber keyboards of Damon Edge, many would say that this is the birth of Industrial music. Just an amazing album.

Probably my favorite album of all time. I had this already on vinyl that I had bought around 1980. The sound is amazing again with a fresh copy! This is a must buy if you like Chrome/Helios Creed!

CHROME in all their WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME glory. Hard to believe these guys preceded punk. These guys were the fork in the garbage disposal antidote to the slick polish of Journey, Boston, Styx and all the other perfect music out at the time.

This is a masterpiece. Heavy Metal? These guys play barbecues. This pressing is not as insanely intense as the original which used to send a creepy rusty metallic shiver down my spine each time I put it on. Never mind just push that loudness button and crank it up.This is the sort of hideous noise that your parents always told you you were listening to. A clarion call to disaffected youth. Listening to this is far better than shooting up your high school though that still remains an option.Garry Bradbury

An excellent twofer containing the second and third Chrome albums from '78/'79, this is an essential purchase for anyone craving more experimental rock stylings. Originally formed prior to the punk boom of '76, the San Fran duo of Helios Creed and Damon Edge really found their feet with these two classics, and unfortunately never hit the same peak in their subsequent careers (though late '80s/early '90s Creed recordings are well worth checking out). Featuring a mix of sci-fi rhetoric/paranoia, screeching, primitive electronics, recorded-in-a-basement noodlings, and touches of krautrock (can, faust, neu, amon duul 1, etc.), hendrix and the stooges, this collection of songs work brilliantly on two levels: as an example of pure, indiluted experimentalism brimming with ideas; and as some of the best "rock" songs - riffs 'n' all - ever written. Got this reissue when it first came out in 1990 and STILL play the thing more often than I'd care to admit. Fans of krautrock, Residents, Nurse With Wound take note...

Punk meets industrial, I will never tire of listening to this classic example of its type.

言うまでもない米国西海岸の狂気・クロームの1979年にリリースした歴史的名盤であり、何度目かのCD化であるが、今回ようやくクレオパトラからのリリースとなり今まで長い間未CD化であった隠れた名作EP「READ ONLY MEMORY」(1979)とのカップリングCDとして出されることになった。歌詞カード(メンバーによる手書き)・ライナーノーツ・当時のポスター・「READ ONLY MEMORY」のジャケに加え使用楽器のデータをも完備したデジパックディスクとなっての登場に驚きを禁じ得ない。「READ ONLY MEMORY」の音は初期クロームの頂点を極めたともいえる怪奇かつクールなサウンドで、クリードの轟音ギターは控え目なものの初期クロームに特有のアヴァンギャルドなエレクトロノイズサウンドが豊かに全面展開しており、音質も冷たくクリアーでありながら、当時のオムニバスLP「サブタレ二アン・モダーン」収録曲に通ずるようなメロディアスな新展開も見られつつあるという、非常に充実した内容となっている。クリードの無機的なボーカルが放つ「I AM THE JAW」の歌詞がいつまでも不気味に耳に残る。というわけで必聴の名盤。

音楽的豊穣を独自の方法で追求した、真の意味でのパンク・ハードコアバンドを多く有するタッチ＆ゴーレーベル。その初期において外すことのできない作品です。この作品で展開されるのは異様なテンションを内包する反復。執拗に繰り返される８ビートの曲群が聴き手を圧倒し、深みへと誘い込みます。現在でいうサイケトランスに通じる快感。極限まで変化を排除し肉を削いだグルーヴに、スペーシーなSEの数々がはさまれます。勿論アヴァンギャルドなだけではなく、どこまでもポップであるのが名盤と称される所以です。凄まじいファズがかけられたギターとザクザクしたドラムは猛烈に格好良く、そしてその粘ついた質感は耳に心地よく全く飽きを感じさせません。はまれば底なしにのめりこめる作品です。畸形的な美しさと言えばいいでしょうか、僕はあぶらだこの青盤を聴いた時と同じような感覚を見出しました。

Hab ich damals leider nicht gekauft. Pressung und die Extras sind den Preis allemal wert. Die meisten Sachen die damals entstanden wirken sich sich auch noch heute positiv auf die Musik aus. Chrome mit ihren experimentiellen Soundcolagen sind auch heute noch wegweisemd.

クロームは、レジデンツ、タキシードムーンらと共にサンフランシスコのアングラシーンで活動していたグループだ。一般にサンフランシスコと言うとレジデンツが思い浮かぶ。しかし、クロームの最高傑作名高い２アルバムを一枚に収めたこのCDには、レジデンツをも上回る異様さとヤバさを孕んだ音が記録されている。初め聴いた時は何が何やらさっぱり分からなかった。どこまでがHalf Machine～なのかどこからがAlien～なのかも分からず、全ての楽器にかかるサイケデリックなエフェクト、異様なSE、突然ぶち切れて突然始まる意味不明な展開、そしてヤバイくらいの疾走感…それらの生み出す圧倒的な高揚感に唖然としているうちに、いつの間にか音盤は終了していた。聴き終わるとすぐにまた聴きたくなり、毎日繰り返し聴いた。今もほぼ毎日聴いている。そして聴く度に高揚感がもたらされる。非常に麻薬的な作品である。メンバーの考案する「ドラッグなしでハイになれる音楽」は完璧に確立されているといってよい。また、一聴は訳の分からぬSEや編集に目を眩ませられて、それこそテキトーな音楽に聴こえるが、聴き込んでいくうちに、それが計算し尽くされた音楽であることに気づく。その点でクロームはドイツのファウストの精神と類似するところがある。ファウストと違ってロック外の音楽の影響はほとんど見られないが、ホークウィンド、ノイ、カンなど往年の実験バンドの影響は随所に見受けられ、それらが「クロームの音」として完全に取り込まれている。クロームは、ジャーマンロックに代表されるロックの実験的方法論を、最高の形で表現したバンドだと思う。
