Poor optimization leads to a very frustrating, ugly experience
So let's get this out of the way:GTA IV is a fantastic game! It's well-rounded, thoroughly carnage-inducing while retaining an interesting level of realism and grit, a couple of characters that you can identify with (though, for the most part, a series of lunatics and sycophants that you'll hopefully have nothing in common with), well written dialogue with plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor, an excellent control system, beautiful graphics (even four years after the fact!), and frankly, a wholly engaging and enjoyable experience. Now, on to the reality:This game is awful. You're probably getting mixed signals - let me clarify: the PC edition of Grand Theft Auto IV is absolutely awful. Poorly ported controls mix with horribly optimized graphics to create a nightmare for anybody that doesn't own a corded 360 controller and have an all access pass to NASA. The run-down on the major parts of my computer are: a six-core AMD processor (~2.8GHz per core), an nVidia GeForce GTS 450 (not exactly the holy grail of video cards, but definitely a solid card for its money), and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM. For all intents and purposes, with a minor graphics card upgrade, my PC is about the best you can get with gaming. Anything more powerful than my rig is absolutely overkill, for the time being. That said, I should easily be able to max this game - I can max out much prettier games, like The Witcher 2, Skyrim, the new CoD and Battlefield, etc. With GTA IV, however, I can barely scrape the 360's level of graphics. My computer very seriously outpaces the 360.So, for what it's worth, if you've never picked up GTA IV, take your money and spend it on a console edition. The PC version just isn't worth it.

Getting the Most Requires Modifications
First of all, to like any Grand Theft Auto type of game, you have to enjoy driving around to get to missions and jobs. GTA IV has plenty of driving, and one thing that definitely can't be complained about is the size of Liberty City - it's huge! You'll want to constantly speed through traffic. (Not far into the game, you can use Roman's Taxi service to reduce drive times.) Secondly, there's a lot more to Grand Theft Auto IV than just assassinations, races, and stealing cars. To complete 100% of the game, you have to be friends with people by seeing shows, playing pool, going bowling, visiting a strip club and eating out. You also have to shoot 200 pigeons("flying rats"), complete 50 stunt jumps, and take out 30 Most Wanted criminals around the city. All these extras add a fair amount of time to gameplay for the player determined to complete GTA IV. The pigeons and stunt jumps are not always easy to find and can be an annoying way of consuming your time, so plan on weeks of your time spent. Third, most of the gaming challenges in GTA IV can be made more difficult or considerably easier. For example, the difficulty of gun battles can be modified by changing the size of your target aid to very small or none at all. You can also choose one of two approaches for battles: Safe and slow. Take cover behind a barrel, box, car, or wall and take out your opponents, which is usually not too hard, since many of them won't take cover. Fast and risky. Just rush in and nail everyone quickly, trying for head shots. If fast and accurate enough, usually you can sustain the damage.Overall, as a shooter, I find GTA fairly mediocre, most battles being too easy. Sometimes your opponents have some intelligence, but usually not much. If you get killed during a shoot-out, you're pathetic! As far as racing goes, GTA IV does have something worthwhile to offer, but as with gun battles, many races are also easy. The most challenging race is the first one. You can decrease/increase the difficulty of races by getting a better, equal or worse car than your opponents. The redeeming feature that adds the most fun to GTA IV and all GTA-type games is escaping from the cops. This can easily become quite challenging, and makes some missions considerably more difficult. In GTA IV, it is almost always better to be killed than captured by the cops. Some people have complained about game performance with GTA IV for PC. I find it good, but not perfect, and getting the desired performance required adjusting the game's graphics settings - my ATI 4850 needs the shadow quality on low to work well. To get the best-looking graphics and performance, I'd recommend a recent Graphics card with 1GB+ RAM, a core i-7 processor, and 4 to 6GB DDR3 RAM. Also, you need to download and install the upgrade patch for GTA IV PC.

Five stars just for the hookers!
The missions are fun and the rides are awesome. But the hookers is what did it for me in this game.

A must buy
Oh..what a masterpiece by Rockstar. I am medical person and I don't get time for gaming, although a while back I completed the story mode of GTA V. Then I decided to purchase it. Prompt delivery by Amazon. There are two dvds a serial key with guides, and a map of liberty city. It is really hard to imagine that this game came almost 9 years ago. Installation was tricky, thanks to a review by a buyer on Amazon who explained the whole process. Remember to install the latest patch 8(just search in Google). Game is running fine apart from some optimisation issues that we all are familiar with in GTA 4(GTA 5 is a much better optimised a game). And although I have a decent laptop with i5 7th Gen, 8gb ram, 4gb 940mx graphics it still stutters sometimes. But overall very enjoyable. A must buy whether you are GTA fan or not or whether you are a occasional gamer or a hardcore gamer.

It's a crap!! Worst ever till date. Even after reading negative comments, I bought it for having such a great confidence on items listed on Amazon site, but I was wrong! It won't work!! You can do nothing about it, I tried all sorts of things to make use of the CD but it deserves to be in dustbin. Guys there is no return available for this item, so JUST DONT BUY IT!!!

Not the best not the worst
Rockstar's vivid tale of Niko Bellic, an immigrant with convictions powerful enough to rocket him through the crumbling substructures of Liberty City's world of organized crime, is now out on PC. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games shipped this past April, and with this one you'll find a few alterations and additions those who waited are sure to appreciate. Despite what's been put in, if you've already played the console versions it's hard to recommend picking this one up, even though it now includes space for up to 32 players in its multiplayer matches and a robust, easy to use replay editor for recording and fashioning clips from your in-game actions. The Grand Theft Auto franchise rocketed to mass popularity after Grand Theft Auto III's release and the ground rules were set for a different style of game. Since then we've seen slight alterations and tweaks to the core formula with Vice City and San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV represents another step forward. This is a game that strips down a lot of the more zany challenges from games past. You won't be doing any remote control helicopter missions or lowrider matching challenges here. Instead, the focus is on realism, a more mature sensibility, and bringing GTA into the present day.Niko Bellic is one of the strongest videogame characters in recent memory.Starting from dealing with your cousin Roman, a small time operator prone to gross exaggeration, you'll move your way up through criminal rings until you get what you want. Unlike GTA characters of the past, though, Niko isn't trying to prove himself as some sort of badass for the ages, driven to rule the city no matter what. He's looking for something, and the missions he undertakes are really the only way for him to find it. He may perform a number of ruthless acts (which you, by the way, instruct him to), but there are points during the story where you can ease your finger off the trigger or make a choice as to how things proceed. Despite the kind of senselessly violent tendencies many may associate with GTA characters, Niko represents an exception in many respects, as he has a code by which he operates. The game's infrastructure has been made more convenient, though there's still space to improve. If Niko fails a mission, a message asking to retry it pops up as soon as you respawn, and when you die you don't lose your entire arsenal. Getting across the gargantuan metropolis is made easier by hailing cabs that take you to waypoints on your map. Stealing a car and driving yourself is always an option, as is the more immersive element of actually riding in the cab's backseat the whole time, staring out the windows at the passing lights. For anyone who's short on time or would prefer to forego the random dangers of driving across a GTA world, the cabs are certainly welcome.Still, you'll be doing quite a bit of mission restarts, and that often means repeating large chunks of the challenges. Many missions break down into an initial travel segment, some kind of escalation event, a conflict, and an escape. Getting through the on-foot shooting sequences, a real headache with the clunky control schemes of games past, has been made much better with the inclusion of a cover system and, as with all PC versions, mouse and keyboard support for aiming and shooting. From behind cover it's possible to blind fire, rapidly pop out to unload a few shots, or move cover to cover, a system that doesn't always work perfectly but is a definite step up for the series. It's possible to use a gamepad as well, which handles vehicles better than a mouse and keyboard. You can even switch freely between the control devices. Juggling the two input methods depending whether you're driving or shooting is pretty awkward, but it's great that Rockstar built it in without forcing you to fiddle with a control input menu toggle. And if you have to pick one, it's far easier to shoot from a moving car with the mouse and keyboard.Aiming is definitely easier with the mouse and keyboard. Some of the mission structures can be really impressive and work well in the context of the narrative's direction, but unfortunately the franchise's trial and error nature hasn't disappeared. You could be doing a mission perfectly until you accidentally tap a cop car, inadvertently shoot an item vital to the mission, or misinterpret a new set of directions that require precise timing upon a mission's phase change, and then it kicks you right back out to try again. Some may interpret that as part of the challenge, but it's a setup that's become a little familiar at this point and its continued existence will likely frustrate series veterans. The strength of story and character along with the amazingly detailed world are undoubtedly going to make strong impressions on whoever dives into this version of Liberty City, but GTA has always been about moments. Remember that time you went off the stunt jump and landed on the pedestrian after slamming through the light post with the police chopper crashing to the ground in the background, setting off a string of explosions rocketing through the stalled traffic? With the PC version you'll be able to actually save that sort of thing using the replay feature. Hitting F2 will save a chunk of gameplay roughly 30 seconds long to your hard drive and make it available for use with the integrated replay editor. This suite of tools will let you drop in filters, splice together clips, add text, attach music, adjust camera angles and more so you can recreate your favorite scenes however you see fit. Want a string of shots of you firing at traffic jams from an attack chopper? Remember to hit F2 every time you're in that situation and splicing them all together should be no problem, giving you the opportunity to save and savor those quirky, seemingly impossible-to-repeat moments that pop up in GTA's unpredictable world.

game is good but installation is hectic
Hello Guys i m writing this review after looking various reviews which says that the game does not install so i will give a detail way with how to install the game.I too had a lot of difficulties while installing this game on windows10.First of all guys this is very old game and as such the support for the app is not up to the mark, you may need constant internet connection with around 1gb during the installationbcoz the cd is almost 6-7 year old and has all the old softwares which does not support windows 10 anymore, therefor it will download the latest softwares.Second dont try to open a social club account bcoz social club account is no longer supported for the game, also you need games for windows account which ends with hotmail/any one related to microsoft, bcoz i tried opening account with gmail but it did not work.Third, i got three errors during the installaion a)related to activation where the bar used too go upto 30% and showed error so the solution was the change the date to year 2014 or earlier and it will register succesfully. b)new patch is required which will remove the social club app from the computer which is pathetic, the patch can be found on rockstar website which around 220mb. c)infinity screen error where the game used to get on but used to run multiole images with background music, so the solution was to create an shortcut app of gta4 place it on desktop, right click on the app, click on properties and click on target, go to the last of the bar hit space and type/copy -norestriction -availablevidmem 512 -percentvidmem100% as it is with the dash and just enjoy the game. The game is just awesome to play, only one thing i did not like was that you cannot control; the cars easily.I play this game without graphics card bcoz my rig contains 10gb of ram. Finally thanks amazon for timly delivery and good packaging.

Activate this game and EFLC easiily
I dont usually write reviews for games i bought but for those who are worried about activating the game correctly for them i will give u the best and easiest way to activate both gta4 and GTA eflc so the easiest way is to get an offline launcher for GTA4 from official site of rockstar support.com(NOTE:- u must first install the game before opening the downloaded installer) it will consume 14 to 20 mb of data after that follow the instruction of the offline installer it will activate your game and now u will be able to play the game. Now for the first time u might get an graphical issue even i got as i have a beast gpu gtx 950 4gb it is present in the game to lag a little but thers is a solution to it too on youtube so u will be able to play it. And for intel chip users do a command line as shown in a YouTube video and Now u will be able to play the game. For story 10 out of 10 . Graphics were little weird but as it was made in 2010 what do u expect more. Its useless if u didnt played GTA eflc after gta 4 because both are needed to complete this one of a kind masterpiece game.
