Nice upgrade from floating hydrometer
Update: Used about 10 times and seemed flawless. Though the last 10 batches of beer it oddly was showing really high final gravities. I figured I added too many non fermentables. Finally broke down and bought a floating hydrometer again and compared. In the same batch that this refractometer gives 1.030, the floating hydrometer gave a 1.011. As I suspected at some piont readings started to become wayyy off. It's consistently off by the same amount on final gravity readings. However it hits original gravity readings perfectly with what the floating hydrometer shows. Still calibrates to distilled water perfectly too. I don't get it. But now it's garbage as I can't trust it.Old Review: These things have come down in price a lot since the last time I checked. Testing this out for the first time makes me wish I had broken my old floating hydrometer years ago. I may actually remember to take readings now or even after the fact if all I have to do is pull a few drops out and put it on this. I typically pitch yeast and then remember, but wouldn't want to mess with the floating hydrometer. Another nice thing this gets around is if you need to take a reading but too much yeast is floating on top to be accurate. Yay!Calibrated it as soon as it arrived and only needed a very minor tweak.

So much less waste now!
I couldn't be more happy with this purchase! This arrived promptly and in great condition. It's accurate and has everything you need to get started. The scales are clear and easy to read thanks to being able to focus the viewing lens.I've included shots of the readings for my batch of mead I started with this refractometer and my hydrometer for comparison. If you're tired of wasting significant quantities of wort/must for hydrometer readings you need this refractometer!***Just like all refractometers you'll need to use an online calculator to calculate the accurate state of your brew once fermentation gets going.

Not for wine makers
If you make wine and your SG is routinely below 1.0, this is not the right refractometer. The built in scale only goes to 1.0. It appears to be that if the SG is below 1.0, it reads 1.024 regardless. It's great for beer or taking the OG. I really like it, but still need my hydrometer after primary ferment.

What I didn't know...
I was very disappointed when I received this instrument and got weird readings, when compared to my trusty hydrometer. Then I learned that a refractometer cannot directly read specific gravity of wort after fermentation. When I found a calculator for making the conversion, I found that the refractometer is very accurate. It is well made and easy to use. The seller was very understanding when I reported my troubles and refunded my purchase price even though the Amazon return window was closed. When I discovered that the problem was user error and not instrument error, I tried to send the seller his money again, but he refused, saying that he took responsibility for not being able to solve my problem. I recommend this instrument and this seller without reservation.

Must-have for any homebrewer.
After seeing other brewers I respect greatly use refractometers during their brewing process, I decided to pick one up. The amount of extra info gained by using this is very helpful. I was able to know when my sparge was becoming less efficient and it’s already given me more insight into my brewing. This refractomer comes in a hard case and is packed in a nice foam cutout to protect it. There is a dropper, tool for calibration, and a microfiber cloth. It worked exactly as described and the automatic temperature control was great to have during the process. I compared it with my hydrometer before pitching yeast and the readings were accurate. For the price, the amount of information you can get from your brewing process using this tool can not be beat.

A must for every Home Brewer!
Absolutely perfect as far as I am concerned. Needed no calibration out of the box (water showed 1.000 SG) though there is a calibration screw and mini flathead driver included if it does need adjustment) crystal clear viewing with adjustable focus. Very happy with purchase and a major upgrade from basic hydrometer. Also need to mention that this has automated adjustment for temperature variation. A+And in case you're curious, in the pictures I'm comparing tap water to "The Amigo" Mexican lager that I just started lagering.

Welcomed addition to my homebrewing arsenal.
I checked calibration with distilled water, it was spot on. I did an extract brew and found that this refractometer matched the pre and post boil gravities as Beersmith listed them. I'm now confident in the accuracy of this device. I can't wait to do an all-grain brew with this so that I can hit my marks.

I can see the light child
The Brix Refractometer in came on time and works as described. It takes the guess work out of my OG and FG readings. My hydrometer worked for years, but I was using too much wort in the end. This is a simple eyelet drop or two, and the numbers don't lie. I would buy from this seller again. Great product for the low cost.
