Lookaftering

Ms Bunyan's 'comeback' album after an astonishingly long break since Just Another Diamond Day sounds remarkably similar- sweet, frail vocals over basic instrumental backing - but is more satisfying than that album. From start to finish it's entrancing and demands close attention (if only to discern here softly sung vocals). Aside from a perfunctory instrumental tacked on at the end it's consistently good. Vashti Bunyan's best album of the three so far released.

You either get Vashti Bunyan or you don't. Her backstory is well known and it's this fragile reemergence into the mainstream that is chronicled on 'Lookaftering'. VB's music is that rare thing, a complete world unto itself, but totally accessible, exquisitely beautiful, delicate, gentle and hugely melodic. Every song haunts the memory and is supported by perfect arrangements featuring a stellar cast of new folk / alt folk musicians (Joanna Newsom, Adem, Devendra Banhart etc.) Each setting is a spare, sparkling web of nylon string guitar, harp, glockenspiel and oboe with Bunyan's cobweb light vocals drifting on top.Most importantly, these are songs about yearning, life, parenthood, loss, friendship and love. Indispensable.

I loved 'Just Another diamond Day' and despite one or two negative reviews on these pages about 'Lookaftering' I decided to give this album a go. I was not disappointed. A wonderful evolution has taken place...Keep an open mind and try it!cjc

Vashti Bunyan sort son premier album à vingt-cinq ans en 1970, puis son deuxième en... 2005, normal quoi ! On pourrait la qualifier de Nick Drake au féminin, mais son folk anglais aux accents classiques et même parfois gaéliques est moins sombre et morbide.Vous ne trouverez pas de basse et de batterie ici, les rythmes sont égrenés par de délicats arpèges de piano et surtout de guitare. Par contre des flûtes à bec, hautbois, glockenspiel,harmonium, verres à vin et des plus classiques cordes ou orgue hammond.La voix de Vashti Bunyan est restée très haut perchée, évanescente mais très claire et lumineuse, rien à voir avec l'asthmatique Clara Bruni-ventoline .La musique de Vashti Bunyan est intemporelle et fait l'effet d'un brumisateur. Les compositions sont très belles, peut-être un peu monotone ? Parlons plutôt de régularité. Les arrangements sont très dépouillés, mais très beaux.Les paroles sont écrites en langue étrangère, alors on y comprend rien. La chanteuse a dû s'en apercevoir, car Wayward Hum, la dernière chanson, est sans paroles, juste murmurée.

ジャスト・アナザー・ダイヤモンド・デイから３０年以上の歳月を経て出た、まるで冷凍冬眠していたかの如く全く変わらない美しい作品。邪悪な心の人は入る事の出来ない神秘の森にて妖精や小鳥や動物達と夜な夜な宴をしているようである。この後、９年ぶりに作品を出すも全く変わらない、多分、動物達と話が出来るに違いない？

まるで子守唄のようにやさしく囁く歌声と、あたたかくやわらかい音色。聴いているとなぜだか、日々を丁寧に生きたくなるような、そんな気持ちになる。つまらないと思っていた繰り返す日常が、愛すべきもののように思えてくる。英語に堪能ではないので、歌詞の意味はわからない。でもVashti Bunyanの歌からは、彼女の思いが確かに伝わってくる。声高に唱えたりなんかしなくても、それは伝わるものなのだ。「癒し」なんて言葉で簡単に括りたくない、心のもっと深いところに静かに響く音楽。掛け値なしにうつくしい。

The Eternal Children と題されたドキュメンタリーフィルム（Youtubeで見ることができます）で、「私は61歳の女だけどまるで児童合唱団の男の子のように歌う」とバニアンは言います。音楽を一度あきらめて２児を育て上げ（画家である娘さんの絵がカバーデザインに使われています。バニアン自身も美術学校中退。）それでも不思議と歳をとらない。無理して若くあろうとしているわけでもないし、たぶんこういう人にとっては、時間の長さというのはあまり意味が無いのではないかと思います。このアルバムにも、前作と同様の、時を超えた美しさがあります。そしてこの作品はより協力者に恵まれています。

皆さんの絶賛レビューを見て初めて聴きました。いや、聴かせて頂きましたの方がこの奇跡のような女性アーティストに対して適切かもしれない。どの曲もひたすら美しいが、とりわけ７曲目の“If I Were”はハープの音色が「チューブラー・ベルズ」の後半部を連想させられ印象的だ。もし自分の死に際に幸いにも音楽に接していられるならこの作品で穏やかに旅立てる気がする・・・売れ筋嗜好だったり、オリジナリティより歌唱力だったり良い音楽＝メロディの良さだったり、好きなジャンル以外否定的だったりのような人は聴かない方がいい。盛り上がりなど何もない、こんなささやくような歌声は退屈なだけだ。感受性と想像力が豊かで、安らぎを求める人なら必ず受け入れられる作品だと思う・・・。

英国フォークの名作として知られた、ヴァシティ・ブニアンの2nd。1970年の作品「JUST ANOTHER DIAMOND DAY」は、素朴ながらしっとりとした素敵なフォークだったが、35年ぶりとなる本作も、音が鳴り出した瞬間、まったく変わらない優しい歌声にうっとりとなる。アコースティックギターとピアノのバックに、彼女のたうたうような歌声が乗ると不思議に時を超えたような感覚で、まどろむように聴き入ってしまう。せわしないこの現代の中で、このアルバムは最高の癒し系サウンドになるだろう。リコーダーやハープの音色も美しい。目を閉じれば英国の田園が広がる。

相変わらずの素晴らしい声に、素晴らしい歌声の響きです。天使を呼ぶ声はまったく衰えていません。・・・が、伴奏が少し煩くなっているのが残念です。もっと純粋に声を聞かせて欲しい。しかし、ほぼ文句なしの星５つです。

癒されます。BGMとして流しっぱなしにしても邪魔にならないですし。おうちでカフェしながら流すといんでないでしょうか。

ヴァシュティ・バニアンのアルバム３枚の内の一枚(うさぎ)が、格安で入手出来て、とても満足しています。

ぼーっとしたいときに、音量を余り上げずに聴くのがおすすめです！

I thought this would be a let down but its beautiful. Not formulaic and trying to match her previous masterpiece. Better that some things just stick in your mind (2*)and the other record (3.5*) truly brilliant. Peaceful mysterious lush intricate beauty

Beautiful album! Similar to Nick Drake in that Vashti's voice is subdued and like gauzy fog threatening to dissipate in the morning sun. Mellow, heartfelt, somewhat somber and introspective, this album is fantastic. The instrumentation is sparse but yet anything more would subtract from the whole. Highly recommended by this buyer.
