Art and Illusion: A Study in the Psychology of Pictorial Representation - Millennium Edition (The A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts)

Scholarly and readable
The only thing that marred this (recent paperback version) of this book for me was the quality of some of the monochrome reproductions, which in the case of my copy were often almost to dark to even discern the subject matter. I notice that another reviewer complained about the pictures in his copy being too light, so it seems to have been a quality control issue. That having been said, this is a scholarly and readable text, even humorous in places. The style is beginning to show age, but the writing is always clear, concise and comprehensible, and the book is truly INTERESTING, for anyone who cares about art. There is a wealth of well-selected illustrations, a few in colour (these were reproduced quite well). Just a pity that some of the B&W pictures were almost useless.

Profound insights
Five stars are not enough for this great book. We are inclined to accept what our sense organs tell us as "reality," but in fact, our perceptions are very much conditioned by our expectations, our education, and our social background. No other author comes close to Gombrich in illustrating these points, and without a dogmatic agenda. There are more layers to the world of the senses than you may have realized. An "eye opener," and not just for art--this applies to science as well.I bought several copies and gave them to my friends.

Interesting
I had to read this book for a college class I was taking. I t was very informative and gave a lot of information about the different forms of art and how art is viewed by different people.

Brilliant!
This is one of the best books ever written about the nature of Art with a capital "A". Has there ever been an art historian as intelligent and perceptive as Gombrich? And he is a wonderful stylist in English, which is not his native language. Insights on every page that are as useful to the student of literature as to the student of the visual arts. If art is important in your life, you must read this book!

Great combo of sprouts
The seeds I received germinated quickly and thoroughly with the resulting mix both crunchy and tasty. It only takes 1 tablespoon to give me a harvest of sprouts that last the whole week! Below is a photo of day 3..it's usually best at day 4 or 5.I'll have this bag forever!

Old News
The book I got was not as advertised. It is in good condition but an old edition (1986). So although a good price I shall have to buy another later edition copy so not so good in the end.
