The Perfect Gothic Story for a Wintry Night...
There is nothing like reading a Gothic novel, especially in those cold January evenings...A short synopsis:Ivy Boscawen mourns the loss of her only son Tim in the Great War. The tragedy prompts her to look into the past, and make sense of the events that led to the death of another boy 30 years ago...The book alternates between two timelines: 1918 (the present) and the loss of her son Tim and 1888 (the past) and the death of another boy. What I liked:- There are actually two mysteries to solve. One in the past and one in the present...- There is no jumping between timelines inside each chapter, therefore, no confusion which is critical to the understanding of the nuances of the story.- The resolution is satisfactory with no loose ends left.Keep in mind:If you are looking for a beach read or cozy mystery with some nice grandmothers, this book is not for you. Laced with a heavy atmosphere of loss and sadness this book will appeal to lovers of Gothic Historical fiction. If you liked this book, you will probably like:The Deception of Harriet Fleet by Helen ScarlettThe Curse of Morton Abbey by Clarissa Harwood

A good story
I wanted to love this book. There is a good story within it that I wanted to read to the end. But it is a difficult book for me to review however, because something felt off. The detail is good, characterisation also, the plot intriguing but the second fire seemed like a rush job to end the book in such a way as to result in the death of the only person who could have told the truth, once the reader learns who really set the first which concluded in the death of a little boy. The reason (motive) for which was illogical and unrealistic. There's no real suspense as we're told before each revelation what to expect that revelation to be. And so for these reasons the story fell flat.
