Brilliant fun but well researched and fascinating
If you love the Gorey poem, and the style of illustrations and want a book that is well researched but easily digestible then you couldn't go wrong getting this fantastic book. Its well laid out, lovely to look at and has lots of fascinating titbits and documents. Super easy to dip into. It will suit goth, taphophiels, death scholars, historians and the morbidly curious along with anyone who loves a bit of humour in their non-fiction. A great gift for all sorts of curious people

Great Info, Stunning Illustrations!
Oh, this book is a wonderful little tome if you'd like to learn about Victorian/Gilded Age mourning customs. The little ditties at the start of each topic are lovely, but what really makes the book a must-have are the knockout sketches from artist Landis Blair. I've got some of his works in my house, and they're really terrific. If you like Edward Gorey's art, you'll love Landis Blair's. Worth the purchase!

Well researched and thoroughly interesting
If you are trying to research about life in the Victorian Era - then death is an essential part of that research. This book was entertaining, but more importantly, it clearly explains the origins and the why's of funeral practices & etiquette.

Only one issue with this book…
I WISH IT WAS MUCH LONGER!!! I loved this book. I’ve read multiple books about the victorian mourning era and they all pretty much contain the same information, but this book had information that I never knew about and found this a great read. Would love to see a vol.2 in the future!

Charming Book
This is a fascinating, detailed recounting of many of the aspects of death in Victorian society. It would be a lovely gift for someone who loves touring old cemeteries or reading about Victorian culture. The alphabetical format makes for perfect reading while you're having your morning coffee or snatching some time for a break from the day.My family went for a walk in our local city cemetery a few days after I finished Ms. Woodyard's book. I saw much of it through new eyes; there were a lot of "I know why that's there now!" moments.
