Quality and high-end finish
A quality of manufacture which gives a great comfort of writing. A bit heavy for a "Ruthenium" finish.

Not as described
Came in a different box. Not in a one from advertisement. The box is from the cheep version of Parker's pen. Complete ruins the look of a presentation of a important gift. It also missing a replacement cartridge what actually should be in a gift box. Poor service for such a money.

Superb piece of craftmanship, good looking and a pleasure to use.
Parker has long had a reputation for quality, precision and reliability, and when it comes to writing implements this Duofold ballpoint pen is truly top of its class. Design, quality and useability are everything and this pen ticks all the boxes for me. I didn't know quite what to expect from such an expensive ballpoint pen, but my expectations were high and I have not been disappointed. Although a little on the weighty side, it is perfectly balanced and a pleasure to hold and use. It sits comfortably in the hand and writes smoothly and effortlessly gliding over the page. The design on the barrel is the trademark chevron in black and gold, and at the price this pen would make an excellent presentation piece or special occasion gift. I feel the design is more likely to appear to men, but that's just my personal opinion. However, at the end of the day despite its many merits, this is after all just a ballpoint pen! I had hoped for such an expensive item it would have been made in the UK, but was disappointed to find on unscrewing it - the word France, which in no way detracts from the quality by the way. If anyone is interested as to what 'ruthenium' is, it is a rare transition metal belonging to the platinium group of metals which was discovered in 1844.

A great gift, and cheap to refill...
So, what do you do with a £385 pen?You touch it - it's got a nice weight, and fits well in the hand; the twist of the top reveals the nib with a satisfying but gentle click. The metal outer casing has a nice, ribbed feel. You look at it - it comes in an impressive presentation box that's fun to open (this pen has 'I don't really know you but wanted to get you something nice as a retirement gift' written all over it) but not a practical carrying case so you don't damage the exterior. It definitely looks the business - an impressive pen to sign important docs with a flourish (if that's your thing), or leave casually at your desk so people can admire it from afar. You replace the cartridge at 1% of the price. Yes, this £385 pen has an ink cartridge you can replace for under four quid on amazon. So is this pen a sheep in wolf's clothing? Depends how you think about it. If this is a gift - it's spot on. If for you, a pen's all about the feel in the hand, then again, this is a good buy. But if you want to splash out on a lovely pen to write that first novel, or sign those divorce papers, and want to feel a real connection to the paper, then bear in mind that you'll words will be in the same ink as the majority of Parker's ballpoints, and you could save yourself a bundle of cash by picking something further down Parker's pecking order. The irony of typing a review for a pen hits home here.

An over indulgence?
The name Parker has long been synonymous with quality and craftsmanship in the world of pen manufacturing; the "Duofold" line has been the Parker Pen Company's symbol of excellence since 1921. One would therefore expect the "Parker Duofold Prestige Black Chevron Ruthenium Finish Ball Pen - Gift Boxed" to represent just about the very peak of the pen-maker's craft -- I say 'just about' because it is, when all said and done, still only a ball point pen and for real class one really does need a proper fountain pen , does one not?Parker pens are invariably well boxed -- often excessively so -- and this one is no exception, arriving in a plush woven-finish presentation box within an outer cardboard slip sleeve. The pen shares the box with a "welcome card" (read: inner printed with Parker hype) and a "luxury booklet" -- a slimline, multilingual affair detailing warranty information (2 years in UK) and providing diagrammatic instructions on how to refill (or fit replacement) for every model of Parker pen (except, it would seem, this one!)The pen itself is, as one would hope, beautifully made from precision manufactured components. Its main body is of black "precious resin" -- a high quality cast acrylic with a good solid feel about it, as well as excellent long life, hard-wearing properties -- which is laser etched with a grey chevron pattern and finished with ruthenium detail strips to match the ruthenium finish of its Parker-trademark arrow headed clip, the twist-action end cap, and the 'nib assembly' at the business end. This latter unscrews from the main barrel to give access to the replaceable ink refill -- a standard Parker " Parker QuinkFlow Ink Refill for Ballpoint Pens ", you'll be pleased to hear -- as well as to the unique serial number which all Parker Duofold pens boast. One particularly good feature of the nib assembly is the fact that the all-important spring which delivers the ball-point's retracting action is captive within it so cannot fall out and be lost during the refill process. In the hand, I found that the pen was a touch too heavy, as well as just a little too fat for optimum comfort. Maybe I am being overly pernickety or perhaps I have become overly habituated to cheap, lightweight alternatives, because the pen's weight does help to provide a good steady pressure to the ball point, ensuring that ink flow is well nigh perfectly even, as well an inertia to the pen, producing some of the steadiest looking ball-point writing that I have ever produced. There can be no doubt that this is an extremely well-made pen which should easily last a lifetime. Unless, of course like me, you have an uncanny ability to lose every pen that you ever hold within a depressingly short time of picking them up. Perhaps this particular model's £385 price tag (at time of writing) would encourage me to take greater care than usual not to lose it? It's more likely, however, that I shall simply be too afraid of losing it ever to use it very much. As a result, I suspect that for many this is one of those luxury items that would simply be an indulgence too far. It certainly ought to be!

Bellissima penna

The Rolex of Ballpoint Pens
First of all, I haven't bought a ballpoint pen for myself in many years. The few upscale ballpoints I have are all Cross pens. I was given a Parker ballpoint pen many years ago as a gift from an employer and always admired the design. I went online recently to see if Parker still had that type of pen that has the retractable press type mechanism on top with thick barrel. It turns out they don't, BUT, there it was, the same thick retractable pen but with a twist top for the ink point instead of the press type. It was beautiful. It was called the Duofold Medium. The price was breathtaking though. Whoa. I decided to gift myself with it and am glad I did. This pen is gorgeous. OK, I kinda went a bit crazy and ordered two more (that's it though, I cannot afford all this). These pens are, as stated in my headline, like Rolex watches. They're made in France. The twist top for retracting the ballpoint itself is smooth and feels solid. I now have the silver metallic, the blue with gold and the black with chrome. The downside is I really like the BOLD refills but this comes with MEDIUM. I happened to find online a German Parker type ballpoint pen refill maker that sells BOLD in both BLUE and BLACK. It's the Schmidt P900 B refill. I ordered both the BLUE and BLACK and it works perfectly with this pen. I'm totally happy now with my three dependents. If you love to write and like a hefty feeling heavy quality gorgeous ballpoint pen, get this. Cherish it. Take care of it. This is NOT your everyday pen. Losing it or getting it "borrowed forever" would certainly not be a good thing. I love this pen. BTW, make sure you order the model that comes with a medium black point (which, as I stated, can be swapped out for the Schmidt BOLD) because the ballpoint Duofold that comes with a FINE point has a cap instead of the twist top. Not my style...more to lose...so, in summation, if you love ballpoint pens and take care of your things, get this. Style wise, quality wise, heft wise, THIS is the best I've found (also one of the most expensive but quality isn't cheap). Now, I must write a grocery shopping list...where'd I leave my pen....
