Ashman Deck Hook, Double Forged Solid Metal Single Piece Rod, Ideal for Bird Feeders, Plant Hangers, Coconut Shell Hanging Baskets,Lanterns, Wind Chimes and Suet Basket

I bought three of these and am very pleased with their quality, finish and sturdiness. They are not very long and at a steep angle so you will need a short bird feeder and they will not be far from you railing. They don’t work with my deck rail so I had to build an anchor to mount them on. Also rusting already in areas that will need to be touched up. See photos.

While the product is well made and does its basic job quite well, it has a couple of flaws. Since the hook hangs so close close to the deck, a couple of problems plague this particular item more than others. First, if you live in an area with a lot of squirrels, they will have no problem standing on the railing and eating from the feeder that you attach. If the hook were to swing out, however, it would be more difficult for squirrels to access. Not only do squirrels eat your seed much faster than birds do, they tend to scare birds away from the feeder.The second flaw of this product also comes from its proximity to the deck: bird droppings. While you're bound to get bird droppings with any deck-attached feeder, the closer it hangs to the deck, the more bird poop you'll have on your decks and railings. Aside from the sanitation issue, as well as a significant "ick" factor, the acidity of bird waste can eat away at wood and damage your deck.Despite being well-constructed, practical concerns keep this deck hook far from ideal. While these will plague any deck hook to some degree, the closer it stands to the deck itself, the more one will have to contend with squirrels and droppings.

This purchase of the deck hook was my second. It is easy to attach them to the rail plus they can hold a full 32 oz hummingbird feeder. I now have 2 feeders at opposite ends of the deck and the hummers seem to like the set up - if one feeder is busy they can fly 6 feet to the other feeder. The attached picture is through a screen but I think it shows the way the hook curves around making it more attractive than other designs.

Very high quality hook! Metal is heavy duty so it can handle a lot of weight. Brackets are rubberized so they don’t scratch. Unfortunately, this did not fit my balcony because the top bar is curved and the other bars are too narrow. Not a design flaw with the hook at all. These hooks are much nicer than the hooks that I had to rig to work. Wish I was able to use them!

I bought this hook based on its description of....2 -8”long offset hooks that can accomodate items up to 16” in diameter. I have a wide header on my deck railing. Unforunayely, this item doesn’t match the description. The 2 hooks for attaching are only 2” & 3” long, not 8”. The clamp area can only accomodate a 2 1/8” width, not 16”. So now have a useless hook unless I can figure out another use forit. Would return if i had kept the packageing or can find a box to fit it. 😖.

This seems like a sturdy product and I purchased it because the description said it would fit deck rails up to three inches. However, the metal bracket that actually attaches to the deck is only two-inches. It will not fit on my deck. The product description was not accurate.

I ordered this hanger hook for my porch railing—it is a solid piece of metal and easy to attach to the hand railing....the only thing is, the bolt on the bottom isn’t very wide and the weight of the metal is too much for the smallness of the piece that tightens up underneath. It’s up and I like it, it’s just not as secure as it could be.

Purchased two, one broke in transit, was able to make it work. They are ok but do not eaten forward enough for bird feeders. Better suited for plants and maybe hummingbird feeders. Not heavy duty.
