Awesome for Autism
One of the features of autism is frequently taking language literally and being unable to understand expressions such as "There's a frog in my throat" and "It's raining cats and dogs." My daughter has autism and I bought this book for her even before I knew of her diagnosis, when she was maybe 10 or 11 years old. She loved it! She carried it around for many months and read it over and over. There is absolutely no question that this book helped her to grasp the concept of idioms. Of course, she also memorized all of these expressions, which was just as helpful. My daughter is in college now. Her best college friend is a young woman who is also on the spectrum. She recently mentioned that she had a very difficult time with idioms. So naturally I got her a copy of this book! It's suitable for any age really. In fact, a family from Austria moved in next door. The father expressed concern over not understanding American idioms. You guessed it! Right back to this book. That it is a colorful children's book is not off-putting to adults. On the contrary, it is extremely helpful.

Great book but too busy
I bought this book for my 11 yr autistic son. He has problems understanding figures of sspeech. He loves to read and read above age level. The book is too much. Sayings are scattered all over the pages. This is too distracting for my 8 yr daughter, who has no disabilities.

Hot Dog! (Wow) Just what we were looking for!
Love this book! It was exactly what we were looking for! Every page was full of beautiful drawings and it had a really comprehensive amount of idioms. We love just about everything Loreen Leedy has done and this did not disappoint either! Highly recommend.

Love it!
We already had this book from the library but he enjoyed it so much we had to buy it! It's especially good if you have a child with disabilities. Sometimes the kids are so literal that trying to get them to understand inferences is impossible! At least with this book for the kids who are so literal they usually memorize everything (in our case anyway) so he can translate the inferences he hears or reads from memory. Even if he doesn't quite understand what they mean. Arrived promptly and brand new! Thanks!!

Great tool for therapy
I use this in therapy as a speech pathologist and my students and I enjoy it! Great illustrations!

Love it!
Great way to teach figurative language. The illustrations of expressions are really great! I wish there were less per page so it can be used with children who actually have figurative language interpretation issues with pragmatic language disorders.

A must-have for students of ESL (English as a second language)!
A charming little book. I have bought a dozen copies over the years for my (adult) ESL students. They love it! A perfect, and highly amusing way, to learn English idioms. Great illustrations, funny but very accessible formatting, excellent choice of idioms. Highly recommended for any learner of English (child or adult)!

Fun and informative
Idioms in a nutshell! Excuse the pun... Lovely book to help explain to children the quirky colloquisms in our every day language. Super illustrations.

Disappointed
This book was too challenging for the students in my classroom. Nine/ten year olds need lots of support to understand the humor in this book.
