Top notch base layer for cold
Used for a snowy backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon. Worked well for me. Heavier than what I usually carry but well suited for colder weather.

Best base layer that I can find!
I would like to give major kudos to Minus33!First of all, my order, through Amazon, arrived overnight as I paid for, without a hitch! Even though I ordered it through Amazon it was mailed to me directly from minus33.I would also like to say that I could not be more impressed with the customer service of this company! I called them prior to placing my order to ask questions that would ensure that I was ordering the right product and the right size. They gave me excellent advice and I got exactly what I needed in the mail.their customer service representatives, of which I spoke to two, are very knowledgeable, very helpful, and very pleasant! My experience with their product is no less than stellar! The scenario for my first couple of uses was working outside in southern Wisconsin in whether that ranged from -7 to about positive 8°F for two Full workdays. I had forgotten that I was supposed to wear this expedition wait base layer of which I have both the top quarter zip and the bottoms, underneath and next to the skin. I had been wearing a cheap pair of fruit of the loom thermal tops and bottoms underneath of the merino wool base layer. The only thing that I had on top of the base layer was one very thick fleece jacket and two pairs of very cheap sweat pants.and I mean cheap Walmart sweatpants. Over that I wore a very thin and packable pair of rain pants and a rain jacket only to keep the snow and precipitation off of me and to help to break the wind. I did not break a sweat due to being too warm, nor did my body feel any of the cold whatsoever. My face was in pain, where exposed, and my hands hurt from the times that I had to take my gloves off to work in detail, but, everything that was covered with merino wool was warm as could be. This set up allowed me to have 100% mobility, Which is very important in my line of work as I have to crawl and climb in and around, and under and on top of things. I could not be more happy or satisfied with this product! If I were going to be working in environment that was any colder, or even subzero at all, I might consider buying a lightweight base layer from this very same company to wear underneath of my expedition weight base layer. I’m fairly certain that that would keep me warm in any cold environment that I am likely to experience in my line of work. I cannot endorse this product enough!I have tried everything that under armor has to offer, I have tried everything but the military has the offer as surplus, the only two options that I haven’t tried are the capalene products from Patagonia and electrically heated clothing. However, I see no reason to look any further for excellent Cold weather workwear! Not only that, but, I had worn this base layer underneath of a single pair sweatpants and a thick cotton hoodie in the weather ranging from the low teens up into the mid 40s in the same day and this product regulated my body temperature very, very well. (This was a the same week that I had received the products,it took a couple of weeks to end up in colder temps.LOL!) Not only did I not feel any chill, but, I also never overheated or even broke a sweat due to this product. It breathes very well, it insulates very well and it does not itch. This is the best product but I have been able to find for what I needed to use it for in the past eight years, and I have tried almost everything available. Thank you very much Minus33!Again,I have been using the Expedition weight quarter zip top and Expedition weight bottoms.I have washed both as per the instructions on the label, two times and they have come out in perfect condition,so far. You can really see and feel the quality of the craftsmanship and material. The thumb holes in the top REALLY make it easy to get the next layer on and off, too!

Initial reaction and some theoretical considerations plus updates
I just received this item. Haven't tried it on yet. Too warm today. This review is just a reaction to examining the product. The first thing I liked is the packaging.* It comes in a box that opens like a drawer. I had watched some Minus33 videos on their Youtube channel so was aware they designed the box this way so that sales people at brick-and-mortar stores can show customers the product and then put it back easily. In the past I've bought merino base layers and other products from a competitor's brand, Icebreaker. I would layer Icebreaker leggings to keep warm. I believe the heaviest weave of Icebreaker's is 260g/m2. So, I was intrigued that Minus33 was selling these leggings which are 400g/m2.Now, 400/260=~1.5. So I might expect the 400g leggings to be one-and-a-half times "warmer" than the 260g. I don't think that would actually be true in practice, since the nature of layering if done right is that the air between layers contributes to the insulation. That is, two pairs of 260g (in theory equivalent to one pair 520g) might be expected to be roughly equal to one pair of 400g, but would probably be a lot warmer because of the layering effect.Still, if I can cut down from wearing three pairs of leggings to wearing two, then the tradeoff is worth it.The reason I'm layering leggings is that I often find myself inactive in cold environments. Super-insulated legs overheat, and the feet become radiators for the excess heat. Thus, the purpose of the leggings is to actually help keep the feet warm. When I'm actually moving around, say hiking, then upper layers such as a hat or jacket may have to be removed to accomodate the excess heat.UpdateI'm putting the leggings through their paces for the first time today. These 400gsm leggings seem to be not much less warm than two layered 260gsm leggings. Not like what I thought above.I think the reason is as follows. In theory the air between the layered leggings should contribute to the insulating features, as I said originally. This remains true. But in practice that air layer is lost every time the belt is loosened, say when tucking a shirt in.Update 2I bought another pair of the Katmais.I think I'm pretty set now for anything the Mid-Atlantic region is going to throw at me this Winter. I plan to wear both pairs at the same time in the colder weather. In the less cold weather, such as now in the Fall, I have the leisure of switching off as I wash one pair and wear the other.------*The second pair of the same leggings did not come in the cool box. They arrived in plastic wrap.

Awesome
Wow, these are just so soft & comfortable, I always remembered wool as being itchy against the skin. Well, I have had my eyes opened. There is not even a tiny bit, nothing, just pure bliss & comfort. Fit beautifully, I'm a 34" waist, muscular build & medium is perfect. No need to doubt if you'll like them, you won't, you will LOVE them, don't want to take mine off. Keep me warm. Fantastic value, an investment for your body. Buy them & enjoy. Peter UK 🇬🇧

this product is a way over priced, at least for a canadian winter!
bought a complete set top and bottom 3 years ago , having heard these merino wool under layers ..were so warm and comfortable .May be in Texas or Missouri but not in our country. l spent over 180.00ca. dollars for these ! what a disappointment, they are too thin and tight in their sizing even at only minus 20 degrees below zero with insulated wranglers on l was chilled to the bone.Had to put on sweat pants over top of these to keep warm.Stanfields, at 50.00 dollars are warmer than these .They ended up at the bottom of my underwear drawer and are still there to day. A complete waste of money for our Canadian winters. these are my worst Amazon purchase.Over 3 years have passed and l still got angry over this.

Great Layer
Amazing Layer. Keep you warm in the coldest conditions, but don't cause you to over heat. Paired with a wind layer these really are expedition worthy.Use them for biking in the winter, no restriction of movement, don't soak up sweat. And if you think you might get caught out in fast changing weather. They don't cause you to overheat in warmer weather, so put em on just in case.I'll be buying the Expedition Top, to go along with the bottoms.

Not so expedition
I purchased this item for my bf who works outside in Toronto for the cold winters and he said they are not warm and if you were going on an expedition you would die. For the money paid he is very dissapointed in this product. when your paying over $100 for what you think will be good quality long johns to keep you warm this is not a good product for canadian winters for men who work outside with layers on top of the long johns.

Best relaxed merino bottoms ever. worth every penny. Minus33 needs to do more marketing.
I have over 10 different merino bottoms from different companies. This has quickly become the leader. Minus33 is forever now on my radar as a top quality company.I recommend this for low exertion tasks, or a relaxing day being unhindered by the cold.If you are looking for high exertion merino for sports, check out Helly Hansen. I prefer a mix of merino and lifa over 100% merino as it helps dry a lot faster.
