Awesome Book!! The Bible For Any Hockey Player, or Someone Whos Still A Bender
First off, I got the paperback, it's large and glossy, and is full of glossy color pictures. Very nice print.Great book, I'm in my 20s learning hockey for the first time. This book in my opinion is better then going onto YouTube and watching all the videos.... I've watched lots of vids on you tube to try to learn the basic techniques of skating, and playing hockey. They all seem to just do the move and tell you what they are doing, but not explaining it, because they don't know the detail of what they are doing. This book starts with basics, and goes on to advance, it talks about the basics of skating, to crossovers, stoppng, sharp turns... Then the basics of he to hold a stick, to shot types, passes types, and later allot of dykes.Great the way it's mapped out with diagrams and pictures of nhl players performing the moves. It's very technical and detailed so you can break it down, and acutely learn them.I found it very helpful reading a chapter or two, then going to the rink and applying it.For an adult who never skated before this book really helped with the basics and a lot more.

Best Fundamental Hockey Book
This book is a "Must Read" for any player. coach and parent who is interested in learning the finer points of skating, shooting, puck-handling, passing and receiving as well as a brief; but extremely informative, history behind the success of some of hockey's most magnificent skaters and puck-handlers.Ron Davidson covers these topics with an expertise seldom seen in previously written hockey books.Reading this book will give you the necessary and acquired confidence to enable you to build a strong foundation for achieving success as a player, as a coach and/or as a hockey instructor.Over the past 40 years, I have read numerous books on hockey fundamentals...and this book...is "second to none".It is little wonder why NHL players and teams seek out Ron Davidson to improve their skills.A "fabulous" read!Gus FaheyWestville, Nova ScotiaCanadaNova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, 2009

Must read for any intermediate hockey player to progress further.
This looks like a beginner book but actually it is not. If you never had formal instruction in hockey or did not finish your first 300 to 500 games you may feel that descriptions of skills are too brief. They are not watered down but they are very precise. Every word matters. Not too much words, not too many pictures but right to the point.

Pretty Good
I found this book to be informative, but very basic. I'm an adult learning to play hockey, and knew very little going in. This book helped me learn a lot of the basics, from things I didn't know about skate sharpening to all the different moves you can make on skates. My only disappointment is that the book doesn't have any drills for someone who is learning to skate. Ten weeks ago, I'd skated maybe 10 times in my life and decided I wanted to learn hockey. I've been doing a beginner hockey school and have come a long way, but what I was really looking for is drills that will help me play hockey better - skating drills, cone drills, shooting/passing, etc. This book delivers what it promises, but not really what I needed.

A Great Reference
As an adult beginner hockey player, I really needed a book or guide that could introduce me to the fundamentals of hockey in an easy-to-understand manner. When you are just scrimmaging out there on the ice, you don't really see the subtleties that make the experienced players better. That's why I was glad to have found this book. It takes you through the fundamentals of hockey playing, from hockey stops to stickhandling to advanced dekes, and explains them about as good as you can without actually being on the ice. In particular, I found the figures to be very helpful; in fact, I don't really see how a beginner can understand these moves without some sort of illustration. There are lots of techniques in the book, and hard to take in all at once for a beginner. That's why, after having read the book cover to cover, I will continue to use it as a reference to concentrate on a handful of techniques at a time. I've even taken it out on the ice during open hockey practice to work on the moves in the book. My only recommendation for improving the book is to include even more figures to illustrate some of the techniques, as these are invaluable for understanding. All in all, the book is highly recommended for anyone looking for improve their hockey fundamentals and become a better player.

Son is a player, but does not read it.
My son was very happy to get the book, but did not spend a lot of time with the book, because it is a little too technical for him. However, it is an interesting book full of good ideas on how to build skills. For coaches, not 10 year old boys.

This book won't make you a better hockey player
This book won't make you a better hockey player, but it has tons of fun facts and information about hockey and some great pictures to demonstrate concepts. My 8/9 year olds enjoy looking at it.
