Great product
These came out in 1954. These are exactly like the one I had. I was eight years old. You sent in a box top from Kellogg’s cereal and $.25. This is a great product great for kids.

Works great
Sub works great, just like the cereal box one did when I was a kid.At the very first It was sort of a dud, then I turned it upside down in the water and rubbed my finger against the vent holes. Then it started working fine. So my recommendation would be that if it doesn't work, make sure to "prime" it in order to get the water in through the vents to start activating the baking powder. It gently rises under the power of the baking powder, then the air bubble gets big enough so that it discharges it with a tip to the left or right and then gently sinks to the floor to do it again. Can be used in a tall, narrow container to maximum effect. Keeps going up and down for quite awhile on one baking powder load.Tried another brand of pink/green plastic and that one was a total waste of money. Subs didn't even sink when dead empty. Go for this one! Made in USA, too!

Really does work
At first, we did not think this sub worked. My grandson and I tried it out in a large mixing bowl on the kitchen floor. I think we were not patient enough. Days later we tried it in a backyard pool where the water is deeper and it worked great! You have to wait for the baking powder to interact with the water and make an air bubble that gets big enough for the sub to tip to the side and release. When this happens, the sup descends to the depths. When it makes another air bubble, the sub rises to the surface and stays there until it tips sideways and releases the bubble. Then it sinks again. it is pretty understated, but my grandson and I both enjoyed guessing when the sub would rise and fall and finally when it had consumed all the baking powder and needed to be refilled. My grandson, who is four, played with the sub in the pool after it was empty of baking powder and enjoyed some make believe submarine moments. This is an inexpensive, pleasant toy if you and your child have the patience to let it gradually build up an air bubble underneath that makes it rise and fall. I suggest at least fairly deep bathtub water for real action. A quiet pool, 3 foot deep, was perfect.

Diving Submarine Original Baking Powder in a round pool.
This sub was put in an 8 foot around pool with 6 inches of water in it. There, a simple wave of the hand or squirt of water sends the sub around the pool as the gasses from the baking powder make the sub go up and down slowly. This action made the sub lots of fun and a good buy for children who like to play in the water.
