It has some marvelous insights that were a good beginning to training
I am semi-retired but used to teach at a psychoanalytic Institute. This was the first book that I asked all my students to read. It has some marvelous insights that were a good beginning to training. I would also recommend it to all who are trying to understand themselves and others.

Inside Lives: Psychoanalysis and the Growth of the Personality
I recommend "Inside Lives" to anyone who is seeking a coherent description of what it is like to be a human being. The author has set out to describe how a personality tries to develop, from its earliest starting point to its death, on the basis of fundamental drives that are common to all. I already believe such drives exist, and I have some familiarity with and acceptance of the drives she identifies, but I was very curious to see if her description gave meaningful shape to my experience of my own life and the lives of others I have known. It did, very much so, and this is why I recommend it.I reckon there is scope for the writing to be clearer, but that is a minor criticism.

Highly Readable
I loved this book and read it in one sitting. it links psycho-analytical concepts to life stages, with some emphasis on Kleinian thought. I liked that Waddel makes extensive use of case studies and also makes links with literature. I wouldn't recommend it if you have read no psycho-analytical works as it assumes that you have some basic knowledge in this field. That said you by no means need to be a therapist to understand this book, you just need to be interested in therapy and in people.

Margot writes is a beautifully poetic style, and at the same time she manages to put very complex ideas across.
