My son is a huge fan of Thomas and Friends so I’ve purchased many and he was passed down many trains from his older cousin as well. The new design has all of the trains measuring the same size. For example, Gordon is the same size as Thomas making it more difficult to distinguish. My son, who lost the old Gordon at the park, was very disappointed with the new Gordon being the same size since Gordon in the show is a bigger engine. My son said it’s nkt the same and wants his bigger Gordon back. :( The older ones were more realistic and now the tenders are just square blocks with painted detail as opposed to the previous, more realistic and dimensional tenders. Also, Fisher Price has changed the track design. They claim that it’s suposed to be easier, but my son and many other kids never had any issues putting them together. Plus the new tracks only have 2 sizes making layouts limited. Thankfully the trains are compatible with the old design as well as other wooden track brands. I have a feeling FP is trying to make it so u only buy their brand of tracks. The neighbor purchased the new Kevin and it’s very basic and lacking all of the wonderful details of the older one! Overall, the new designs are very disappointing, especially when these trains aren’t that cheap in price. It seems the only good reviews of the new design were made by people from some “Vine” Amazon review, and it’s obvious in many of these reviews that the purchaser (actually I believe they received item for free in exchange for review) have never even owned Thomas wooden trains and tracks prior to, so they truly don’t get to see the real comparison between the old and new designs. Hence some reviewers not knowing the plastic tracks were adapters and believing that was the actual track. I am beginning to wonder if there are so many Vine reviews due to all of the negative reviews about the new design. My son plays with his trains every day so I truly hope they listen to the many people who have purchased Thomas and friends throughout the years and go back to designing the trains more like the shows and the books!

The product is as pictured. I was hoping it would look a little better in person. This is the first engine I've purchased since they changed the wooden trains My son won't play with it, he prefers the older models of wooden trains. He has even asked that I finish painting him.

I gave this to my 3 yr old as a surprise and he said "mom, this is all wrong". He has more than 20 Thomas trains and he is obsessed with them. I am back to buying the older models on Ebay because the new design is incredibly disappointing.

My three year old grandson is very happy with this! I am disappointed in Mattel’s quality. Yes this is hard wood, but there is less paint on the product, the coal is just paint. The quality f the former versions were far better.

This is a new Thomas & Friends Wood Train design. Our family hates it. My son was happy and didn't notice a difference, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. We have a train set that is over 15 years old from my son's older half sister. It was an old classic and it was nice that we could just buy add-ons for the old set. However, with the new designs, the trains look like cheap pieces of wood glued to each other. They barely have any paint or design on them to look like a train. Also, the track connections for this new design have changed, which means if you have an old set the new tracks won't fit. And with only two adapters in the set, there is no way you can honestly link up your old tracks with the new ones. We've literally invested several hundred dollars into this train set over the years because they never get old, they never changed, and they always were played with, but now? Humpf!Two stars only because my son was happy and content with the purchased, but I will be looking for used or old versions from here on out.
