Princess Cyd

Boring Cyd
Princess Cyd is in large part a gender, sexuality, and race contrivance. Seriously. Gender fluid? Check. Pansexual? Check. Poly? Check. Asexual? Check. Possible interracial romance down the road? Check. I think the film wanted to showcase today's fluid youth via Cyd and Katie... contrasted with Aunt Miranda's asexual (okay, possibly menopausal) character. I'm not opposed to any of these elements in a story, but I expect a better story first and foremost. And characters I can care about. But I don't think the plot and characterizations got anything more than a shallow treatment. Too many characters standing about spewing lame and awkward dialogue.A young girl (Cyd) has lost her mother in a tragedy and at some point after she goes to stay with her lovely Aunt Miranda, a famous writer, for a couple of weeks. This story is about their couple of weeks. She meets an androgynous girl with a mohawk in the coffee shop and I thought it would be just about their friendship-turns-romance. But it's equally about her relationship with her estranged aunt and her attraction to more than one person/gender.I hated Cyd. What an insensitive, self-absorbed and disrespectful kid. Aunt Miranda isn't any deeper. Mohawk girl was probably the most likeable. But I didn't really care about any of their relationships.I would rather watch the opening 20min. of 2001: A Space Odyssey on repeat than millennial sex lives...

An incredibly thoughtful coming of age film
I really enjoyed this! It's beautifully shot and explores a familiar concept in unexpected, very rewarding ways. It's not often you get to see a coming of age story that is this thoughtful and meditative. I really appreciated the performances as well. Without a doubt, Jessie Pinnick and Rebecca Spence give two of the best performances this year. Both are so effortless and charismatic. It's not a perfect film, but there's a lot of charm in its few imperfections. The characters are so well written and I loved that they were intelligent in specific and believable ways. In many ways, it's a surprising movie, but the true reward is how relaxing it all feels. It has a confidence and ease to it. And it just feels nice to follow these people around for a while.

Realism at its best - unpretentious - and the characters grip you...
What a talented cast to render this spare script into an hour and a half or so of storytelling that takes you away. It was hard not to yell advice to the screen to the characters - they were that real - and you cared for them without quite realizing it. Loved the setting in Chicago, loved the diversity of the cast, loved the acting, loved the storytelling. A very nice gem - helpful in week 8 of the Covid quarantine where you want to watch stories that take you away from the day. Thank you.

It's worth the watch and I was happy I got to see it
"Eh" is all I can think to say. I'm no proper critic but I think the movie was decent in the acting, plot, characters and cinematography. I almost think it's trying to be more than it's not, deeper than it actually is. Regardless it's worth a watch, especially for LGBTQ teens and young adults. There's not much in the way of movies for those hitting the developmentally important parts of life, more importantly when they involve "non-typical" experiences or discoveries of personal desires. It's worth the watch and I was happy I got to see it.

Not perfect, but lovely and gentle
Not perfect, but lovely and gentle. I love the literature, loss and return to love on multiple levels. "What brings you the most pleasure?" CAKE Fabulous!!!

great characters and acting
the characters were complex and I love the way their relationship was portrayed. love that it was an lgbt main character without that being the whole story

Pretty dull
This movie was, quite frankly, boring. There were a few brief glimpses of talent from the cast, but mostly it was just some fairly uninteresting people engaging in awkward dialog. The main character, sporting a semi-interesting tragic backstory, was actually just kind of annoying. And what I think was supposed to be a feel-good coming-of-age type story was a series of serious but not overly dramatically-done scenes. I really wanted to like this movie, but they just didn't give me anything to actually like.

The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love (2ガールズ)という作品では、親代わりの叔母と姪の家庭が、こちらはコミカルに描かれていますが、現実的にはなにかと難しいテーマだと思います。

Keine Empfehlung
