Exciting and inspiring
This mountain climbing memoir is a page-turner. Following Zeiman -- a third-year medical student at the time -- as she navigates extreme conditions, the team’s medical challenges, and being the only woman on this record-breaking climb, makes for a riveting read. Though raised in New York City as an Orthodox Jew whose joy had been primarily derived in dance studios, she eventually finds herself drawn to nature. Zeiman’s love for the mountains comes through in her vivid and visceral descriptions infused with emotion. Writing about her eventual descent while caring for the team, Zeiman writes, “…I admired the change in the valleys, now snowless and full of budding trees. The air felt thick, luxuriously rich with oxygen, like breathing cake."For any woman dealing with imposter syndrome…this serves as a primer for trusting yourself, or maybe doubting yourself and going for it anyway. If Zeiman is up to this daunting task of caring for the climbers when things go awry, it’s due to her diligence, preparation, and an inner strength we see her calling upon repeatedly. Zeiman went on to become an OBGYN, and writes poignantly about one of her pivotal moments while training in her field: “Overseeing this moment, I asked others if they were ready, even though I didn’t feel quite ready. I still often don’t feel ready, but I’ve learned women often underestimate themselves. We can handle more than we think.”This book will appeal to mountain climbers, the climbing-curious, and women seeking inspiration from the triumphs of fellow women. This memoir is a fascinating nail-biter, and not without its moments of joy and levity. When, in a stir-crazy moment (after weeks of waiting at base camp for the weather to clear) Zeiman tap dances on the mountain to connect with her truest self, the guys join in…and we want to as well.

Superb
This memoir is as much of an inner journey as an outer one. I loved reading about how Mimi Zieman’s upbringing in NYC and her family’s history—in particular her father’s holocaust survival—influenced her life path and attraction to mountains. Once you start this incredible book, you won’t want to put it down.
