Great Unit if You are Handy with Tools
There are few things around the house that are as troublesome to deal with than managing all the water hoses. You need the water where you want it, but you have to add uncoiling and re-coiling the hose every time you want to use it. The hand crank reels require a good bit of strength to operate and hand-wrapping them onto holders is time consuming as well. The solution – a wall-mounted reel that feeds you as much or as little hose as you need, and automatically retracts when you are done. Simple.I purchased the 50’ version of this unit based on generally favorable reviews, the look of the unit, and the high-pressure rating. It arrived and was reasonably simple to install. I used a hammer drill to mount it into a block wall on my patio so that my wife could easily water her plants whenever she wants and have a way to manage the hose without leaving it out all the time.A couple of weeks after installation, the anchor bolts let go and the unit nearly came off the wall. The hole size suggested by the instructions meant that the plastic anchors were not able to expand enough for a permanent hold. I replaced them all with toggle bolts.A few weeks later, I came out to find my patio flooded and water pouring out of the hose reel. I shut off the water and pulled all of the hose out to reveal that a green retaining ring had shattered at the flexible connection point at the supply end of the hose (See Images). It looks like quite a bit of engineering went into this strain relief/hose coupler feature, but not much into the suitability of the plastic, the thickness of the plastic, the choice of plastic, and/or whether the plastic needed to be glass fiber reinforced.I went back to Amazon to look for parts, but only found lots of complaints from other customers who had the same problem. I decided to ask for a refund, even though I was a few weeks outside the 30-day window. Amazon relented after about a half an hour of chatting, and sent a call tag for my old unit and a replacement unit. The replacement unit promptly arrived, but it was the wrong model – a 30’ version that was lower pressure rated and would not reach where I needed it to. After another half hour of chatting, Amazon explained that I could not receive another replacement, since I had already received two items (regardless that one was wrong), so my only recourse was to order another one, which I did.The replacement for the replacement promptly arrived and was also the wrong model – another 30’ version. They look the same, so I can understand where warehouse pickers may grab the wrong one, but I thought everything was bar coded to prevent exactly this sort of picking error.A third chat session resulted in another UPS tag, but left me having paid for two units and still with no solution. This is where I decided to take matters into my own hands and perform corrective engineering surgery on my original unit.I did not want to take the unit apart due to the very strong spring that I suspected lives inside and I anted nothing to do with it escaping and wreaking havoc on me or my dog, so I went in through the inspection port (see pictures). I secured the reel using a ratcheted cargo strap so that I could control the position of the hose connection, particularly when I cut the hose – again, I didn’t want to have to reload the spring mechanism.I cut the remaining black retaining collar with end cutters, to give some space to remove the male part of the hardware. Once that was done, I cut the hose at the retainer clamp. Loosening the retaining clamp, I pulled out the long strain relief/anti-collapse spring from the hose so that it could be rejoined with the barb on the outlet side. I slid on a stainless steel hose clamp, then with a lot of effort (owing to the small space, worked the hose onto the outlet barb, and tightened the hose clamp, securing the hose to the internal water outlet. If I had it to do over again, I would have used my heat gun on the hose end to make it more pliable and easier to fit over the barb – live and learn. Finally, I released the reel from the cargo strap and let the hose wind itself back on the reel. I also installed a shutoff valve ahead of the reel so that it wouldn’t be pressurized all the time. While the hose is rated for the pressure, the original coupling components were clearly not, so I am using a vale to control flow to the device. It’s been a couple of weeks since the project was completed and it hasn’t come apart. Long story short, this is a great unit if you can reengineer the mounting system and the internal hose coupling on the feed side, and if you have about 8 hours to deal with the chats with Amazon, trip to the hardware store, and in my case, a trip to the UPS store to drop off the two incorrect replacement units. Even at minimum wage, I’m upside down on this unit, but it works well (now) and my wife can water her plants when she wants. Happy wife, happy life.I still rate this unit a 4 (if you are handy with tools). It really is very handy and works very well. The hose retracts better if there is not water in it.If you suffer the same fate with your unit, you can fix it yourself for less than $3 plus about 30 minutes by following the repair I affected and save yourself the wasted time of dealing with returns. My suggestion to the company is to seriously rethink your over engineered/underperforming coupling hardware.

Only lasted one year
Looked great but the hose rewinding mechanism broke after only a year. Don't waste your money on this piece of junk.

Not sure which model is which the box says Gw030
Number of inconsistencies on the description, I ordered a unit with 50’ of 5/8” hose what I got was 75’ of 1/2” hose. Also the warranty was stated on Amazon as 3 years, the box says 5 years, I’m going with 5. All in all it seems well made. It looks nice and I decided to keep it even though I’d prefer a larger hose, but it’s not a big deal. I hope it holds up as you can’t really see the insides of the unit.It says Power USA but it’s made in good old China.

Weak link.
The hose reel works well and the hose attached to the reel is fine. The problem is the short length of hose connected from the reel to the water supply this kinked in two places and would not return to round so the water pressure was reduced 80 percent. So I cut the hose at the kink closest to the reel. There was a spring inside to prevent kinkimg which did not help. Off to Home Depot and got a heavy duty hose and an in line repair kit. Cut a piece of the new hose at the side that connects the water supply and attached it using the inline repair kit. Now the hose works fine and should not kink with the new heavy duty repair. The code was about $30.

No longer disappointed
I initially received a used hose that did not function correctly. Power Products customer service responded very quickly to me and immediately sent me a new hose. This one does work as expected, so I am very happy with it. You have to get used to some tension pulling it out, but the retraction feature is nice and I no longer have to deal with coiling up a hose or looking at it. When you retract it, walk it back like the instructions say. If you just let it go, it will go kind of fast and freak out your dog like it did mine. The pressure is noticeably better with this hose than my other standard Home Depot hose, so the water stream on my sprayer reaches even farther which means I don't have to pull as much hose length as I did with my old hose. Getting used to pulling it out is worth not having to coil up a messy hose anymore. Their customer service was great. If it was not for them, I would have not given it another chance.

The hose is NOT 5/8ths inch ID.
It is actually half-inch inner diameter, or more likely a metric size such as 12 mm. I know this because I bought a 5/8 replacement end (female) to shorten the 6 foot leader hose, and the barb wasn't even close to going into the hose. But a half-inch replacement end went in a little too easily, thus the guess about 12 mm. It's China made, of course which explains the metric sizing. So, I'm disappointed about the lack of flow through the unit, but I'll have to live with it until Northern Tool has their Strongway unit back in stock.Otherwise the operation of this "Power" hose reel seems okay after a few days of use.

Poor design
Purchased 3 units, Connection broke internally - no way to repair it, did receive a replacement unit - good, but after 2 years, the retracting tension has failed - no way to adjust or repair these units. I would not recommend purchase of this unit.
