Superb companion to the TV series, and a great read in its own right.
Paul Murton is an engaging presenter with a rare gift of listening to the people he interviews on his travels, and an obvious affection for the landscapes he has spent years uncovering. All these qualities come through in the book, and the photographs accompanying the text are beautiful. It's a pleasure to dip in and out. I'm inspired to see more of the islands, and to learn more of their history.

A lovely book, superbly illustrated
I know the Hebrides well and have many books on them, i like Paul Murtons television series so wasn’t expecting much more. I was wrong. This book is lovely to just pick up ,open any page, and just enjoy.

Amazing Book!
I bought this for my father as he likes to travel in Scotland in his campervan. He loves the book and said it contains great information about the islands in the outer hebrides.

Chunky tome - but worth its weight!
Yes, you may need two hands to cope with the heavy duty, high quality, 'paperback' - but you feel as if he's in the room talking to you and pointing out places and scenes as you chat over a wee dram.Style is easy, layout sometimes a little text heavy but the ease of the narrative and the pictures just keep you moving through.Dip in or go for the full tour back to back - either way, you'll enjoy the journey, learn, or remember, much and be exhausted by the trip. Enjoy.

Plain
This is a readable, reasonable introduction to the Hebrides. The islands are arranged in chapter groups and each given a profile of around one to four pages. Entries start with an explanation of the island's name and specification of its size. Paul then either recalls some (largely superficial and often weather-based) memories of visits in his younger days and adds some interesting stories about the island's history and folklore. The focus wanders a bit. Sometimes this seems like a reference book, sometimes like a travelogue and sometimes like a book version of the TV series complete with what I imagine are transcripts from his interviews. Overall, the writing perhaps lacks colour.

Great book
This book could be used just as a travel guide, but it also has a lot of history and local impressions all in a very readable style. It would be worth the price just for the magnificent photos, many by the author.
