Easy to Apply but VERY STICKY
I usually dye my hair using hair chalk. I wet my hair to get a more intense color but find the process a bit messy and tedious. I decided to try these pens cause they seemed super easy and way less messy. The hair pens look like and have the consistency of a large cream eyeshadow stick that you twist up as the product gets low. I used the pink and purple pens to create an ombre effect on my blonde hair. I applied the color to dry hair. The colors were very bright and the pens made the application very easy. However, I found the dye made my hair very sticky and clump together. My hair was very hard to brush or style. I tried using a curling iron to see if setting the dye with a little heat would help, but the hair remained sticky. The end result looked ok but I could not brush or run my fingers through my hair at all. I usually use temporary dye when I wear my hair down and considering how sticky my hair felt I would not use this product again.I think these pens would work better if you were not going to style your hair but either braid it or put in in a bun.

It wasn't the best in DARK hair, but...
I bought these for my 8 yr old daughter who wanted to dye her hair pink. Her year round school frowns on the crazy colors so we needed something that would wash out. We used this with her cousins. We had a blonde and two brunettes. The color went in really well in both my nieces' hair (blond and light brown hair). It was a little iffy in my daughter's hair she has dark brown hair. I've seen the reviews about this going in well in "dark brown hair" but when I looked at the pictures, most of them had medium or light brown hair. To be clear both my daughter and I have DARK brown hair, about the color of Hershey's milk chocolate. I had my concerns about it showing up in my daughter's hair. It wasn't great in her hair, but not awful. You can see the color when she's outside in the sun, but at night it's barely noticeable. The green was pretty good. It showed up in any light, but i wonder if it might stain light hair. I can't say for sure since my blonde niece did her hair in blue and purple. It looked amazing. My niece with the light brown hair did mostly pink, but tried them all. They showed up great too. These do make your hair feel different. You can't run your fingers through your hair. We didn't want to risk getting it on their clothes so we put their hair up. looks great in pony tails and braids and buns. We found if there were lumps of color left behind they comb right out as long as you comb it before it sets. It's much harder to run a brush through when it's set, but we expected that since we're coating their hair. The color is basically like a tube of lipstick, just a little thicker. I wouldn't recommend doing all your hair with these unless you have a LOT of time on your hands. It looks best if you just do small strands at a time.Over all, these are great if you don't have super dark hair. It went on well, and more importantly to me, washed out well. She slept with it in her hair and it didn't stain her pillowcase.

Crayons NOT chalk, best on very dry hair
Although the colors are bright and have a nice metallic sparkle, they have a very greasy texture that never truly dried on our hair (despite what the package said). They did work well on a friend's extremely-dry hair; but on ours they stayed greasy and unpleasant. We wouldn't buy this again, but she might. This is NOT hair "chalk", it's more like hair-crayon. Also it doesn't work well on dreadlocked hair; hair chalk is better for dreads. These hair-crayons tend to leave weird, sticky little chunks that are hard to wash out of dreads. But the colors are beautifully bright and easy to blend, and the silver, pink, and green shades even showed up well on black hair, which is impressive.

Received wrong item, but item we did get was okay.
I am torn on what review to leave here. I ordered the metallic hair chalk for my daughter and received the bright colors in the metallic packaging. Amazon refunded my money and told us to keep the product we received. We have used the bright colors and not all of them work well on dark hair. The green looks more dark turquoise but went on the hair quite smoothly. The red showed up a bit better, but came out with little chunks of the chalk in the hair. The purple went on nicely and showed up pretty well but faded quickly and was hard to see after an hour or so. They wash out and off the skin very easily (that is a plus to me, though I can see that being a negative to some).

Great for kids/ shorter hair
This temporary hair chalk actually works rather well. Even on dark brown hair like mine. However, there is not much chalk in these pens. I was only able to get a few steaks of color in my long hair before it was out. I think this would work super good on kids as it washes out really easily or if you have shorter hair.

Great for kids to play with
These showed up pretty well in my children's hair, one is a toe-head blonde and the other has dirty blonde hair. My daughter loved the colors she got to choose from. They were a little greasy and you lost some of the color if you tried to brush it out to make the greasy look dissipate. I bought them for my 6 year old daughter to play around with, so I love them for that purpose. They washed out easily with no residue left in their hair.

Works well on DARK hair. DONT recommend for BLONDE HAIR
Got this mainly for the green and orange for Saint Patricks Day. I ended up NOT using it on my own hair, because i tried the green and it really didn't want to come out of my natural blonde hair. I have very fine, thin, straight hair and I had to wash it at lease 4/5 times before all the green was out. That being said, It worked perfectly on my husbands beard and head. He has thicker dark brown hair/ beard. I did half of his beard orange and the other half green. The only downside is the green was a bit dark so I had to add yellow to it to make it brighter/stand out more. It also works well on skin. The colors blend really well, but if you get caught in the rain they will drip/wash out. We used them again for a Mud Run a few weeks ago and it didn't hold up too well to the moisture. There is a surprising amount in the small container too! both times we used this we put it on at least 6 people before we finally ran out.
