Great potential, but quickly went down the drain.
There is a good story buried here in mind-numbing verbosity. This author is in dire need of a stern, experienced editor who could easily cut out 150 pages or so without harming the premise at all. Quite the contrary. This is a 300-page novel drawn out to well over 450 pages. There are a lot of interesting characters, the protagonist is amusing many times and it could have been a page-turner. Actually, it was, as there were so many times it became deadly boring that I had to rapidly skip through until something happened.Every scene Lashner describes in excruciating detail until I was ready to scream. In the middle of the book, for example, a diary is discovered written years earlier by a young lady. She gushes on and on and on for one of the longest chapters in the entire book. I finally just jumped to the end of that chapter, and realized I had missed absolutely nothing. That entire thing read like a bad romance novel. What is the matter with editors today? Do they really feel all the incredibly boring verbiage helps?Too bad. If anybody wants to give it a try, I suggest they be prepared to skip through the dross to find the few nuggets of gold in this turgid prose.

A good read, but a bit too long?
A few months ago I had the pleasure of reading Lashner's book entitled "Barkeep" and was so impressed with the plot and the exquisite writing, and so order a number of Lashner books from Amazon, and "Veritas" is the first one I have read. While the plot of the books is good and the author's choice of words and phrases is excellent, the book felt a bit too long and the development was kind of slow - I felt that that was mush slower than "Barkeep". A part of the problem may be that I could not sympathize well with the protagonist Victor Carl.

Veritas
Williiam Lashner is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. The twists and turns in Veritas kept me wondering during the entire book "who done it". The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that some of his characters, and there were a lot of them, just didn't come to life for me. I found it difficult to keep track of who was who and who did what to whom because of that. But his ability to weave such a complex story definitely won me over!

WILLIAM LASHNER'S SECOND
This novel, what ever name you use, is follow up to BITTER TRUTH and it's hero Victor Carl. I will go on to the third book. I loved BITTER TRUTH, I like Veritas. SOO much info to try to absorb. A little too long and too complicated, could have been edited down to a much more reasonable read. Victor Carl is a good character. Start with the first novel.

Gripping
Intriguing story of love, lust of money, betrayal & revenge, this book at first grabs the reader loosely, strengthening its grip as the pages progress. It is a treatise on the dark side of human nature, exposing greed at its basest, in traditional business, in familial relations, & in organized crime. It is a journey well worth the taking. In the end, answers are found, not only solution to the puzzle behind the quest, but also to relieving some of the emotional emptiness driving or driving down the lives of the main characters. And, perhaps (with a little introspection), of the reader as well. It is a book you will be glad you have read, one that will leave you thinking.

Pretty good read
While you sometimes get lost on who did what, in this book, it is still a good story line even though a bit dark. All of the characters are a bunch of criminals and not one of them are even lovable but you just can't stop reading the book wanting to know what the next varmint is going to do. I highly recommend this entertaining read. Maxmontgomery

A disappointment
Veritas is the fifth novel I have read by the author. Victor Carl had become one of my favorite characters and in one review I pegged him as the Jack Reacher of the courtroom. Unfortunately, this book did not live up to my past experiences. I found it somewhat difficult to keep up with the story; there were too many confusing twists and turns that made it a difficult read. If you haven't read a Lashner novel before, I suggest one of his other books such as Hostile Witness or The Accounting. Veritas just wasn't up to the standards I had come to expect.

A dark story about a seriously bent family!
i enjoyed this story.william lashner is a fine writer and tbis tale is above average compared to similar crime fiction. However it doesnt delight in the same way as Bar Fly or The Accounting. Victor is less developed and not as likeable. Its still a good read just not a 5.

Such great descriptive writing needs to be savoured
William Lashner draws you in, I started off thinking Victor Carl is a wimp and and I really couldn't care less what happens to him but in the end you begin to admire his honesty and doggedness. Don't expect to skim read this, rather ration yourself to a few chapters at a time. Such great descriptive writing needs to be savoured. I'm going to get Past Due next, after I've had a brief flirt with easy read bedtime pulp crime..

Victor Carl lawyer
I give this book a 5 star rating because it arrived in excellent condition from America in no time at all and because I would recommend it to anyone who loves lawyer courtroom novels with a lot of wit and humour in them. I'd read them when they first came out in the 90's and am enjoying re-reading them and used books is a good way to go!
