A midsummer honey that has mild vanilla tones and light color. Perfect on toast, in coffee, or as substitute for sugar in baked goods. Alfalfa blooms across Minnesota, where it is used as a grazing crop by ranchers for their pasture-raised animals, as well as hay production. Alfalfa is unique in the world of bee keeping, as bee's don't like collecting pollen and nectar from the alfalfa plant. The shape of the alfalfa plant makes it whap the bee in the head, so they learn to avoid alfalfa as they get older. Traditionally bee keepers would only be able to harvest alfalfa pollen and nectar by using new bees that had not learned to avoid the plant. Today the lucerne leafcutter bee is used, which has a body that does not suffer the alfalfa plant's blows. The signature raw honey from Ames Farm is meticulously produced by segregating each 33 pound "super" or box of honey. Each jar is packaged by the hive number, location and flower source or season, all of which is printed on the label. In keeping their hives healthy, they do not feed antibiotics preventatively or put any unnatural treatments into their hives. They still use traditional wood/beeswax combs instead of plastic comb that has taken over the industry.
