It was a thriller movie that came out in September of 2011. Its subject was the outbreak of a deadly virus. The film was titled, “Contagion.” It was very successful at the box office. Steven Soderbergh was its very capable director. In it, a fast-spreading “mystery” virus wiped out tens of millions of people worldwide.Enter the deadly coronavirus outbreak! Its connections to the disaster film are on the scary side. It was reported weeks ago in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Local scientists there claimed it started, like in the “Contagion” film, from animals and then jumped to humans. To date, 106 people have died in China from the virus and more than 4,500, they claim, have been infected. The disease has been confirmed in 17 other countries, including the U.S. where five people are being treated.At press time, Januay 29, 2020, 17 cities in China have been shut down encompassing 50 million people, according to news reports, “as the virus continues to spread.” According to the British paper, “The Daily Mail,” a nurse in China has claimed, “90,000 people have been infected.” This story, like so many coming out of China, has yet to be confirmed.Experts, however, at the MRC Center for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, in London, UK, estimate that more than 100,000 people, not 4,500, were infected worldwide as of the January 26th date. The count depends on “testing,” they insist, and “not everyone is being tested, they underscore.Wuhan is a city of about 11 million-plus. It is on lockdown! No one in and no one out. The film did a really solid job showing how scientists identified, and eventually, contained the disease.The virus in the movie, like with the Coronavirus, started in the Far East – the city of Hong Kong. The film also spotlighted the panic that can break out in a society where there is a loss of social order. Citizens are shown fighting desperately for drugs while wrecking a pharmacy that they believe will fix their problem.Another virus expert, Dr. Howard Markel, of the U. of Michigan, maintains that “to put a ring around the city of the size of Wuhan with its population is unprecedented.” Markel is the author of the book, “Quarantine.” The Center for Disease Control has reported a “total of 110 people in 26 U.S. states are now being evaluated for coronavirus.”The movie features some of my fave actors: Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Winslet. The plot has a lot of twists and turns in it, too. Also in the flick, the disease spreads at a breath-taking pace. By Day 26, the death toll has reached “2.5 million in the U.S. and 26 million worldwide.” (Wikipedia) All the major health agencies in the U.S. are featured, along with international counterparts.According to the “Wall Street Journal,” the U.S has sent a plane to Wuhan, China, to evacuate American citizens, “including U.S. diplomats and their families.” The aircraft only has about 230 seats, while “about 1,000 US citizens are believed to live in the central Chinese city.” It was reported on January 29th, that 201 Americans were rescued from Wuhan and landed safely in California. (Daily Mail)The coronavirus outbreak’s impact on U.S. businesses in China is not known at this point. Festivities for celebrating the Lunar New Year were also canceled in order to be on the safe side. Schools, too, were being closed until late in February. According to the “New York Times,” travel constraints imposed earlier on Wuhan and areas nearby, “have penned in 35 million people…and Beijing has restricted its bus travel.”In the “Contagion” movie, a vaccine is found after Day 133 of the crisis, and the film soon ends on a happy note. Let’s all hope and pray that the coronavirus crisis comes to a safe and speedy end, too, and that the loss of lives is kept to a minimum.

I watch this video year after year as it succeeds at a human level by capturing the fear, grief, and social upheaval that such a catastrophic pandemic would inevitably unleash.You witness not just the medical emergency, but the erosion of order, the mistakes of bureaucracy, the spread of misinformation, and the tough ethical dilemmas faced by decision-makers.Contagion is a well-crafted, chillingly current thriller that serves as a potent warning about the existential threat of global pandemics. It deserves credit for foresight and committing to realism over cheap sensationalism.This movie will make you ponder how perilously unprepared we still are, as it was produced almost a decade before Covid-19.Overall, I think everyone should watch this movie at some point, sooner rather than later.

I discovered this movie after our pandemic and fell off my chair that is was written & made before the pandemic. WOW . . .it's like the writers could see the future not knowing that we were going to go thru this in a couple of years. Even Sanjay Gupta from CNN was in the movie . . .I was shocked! It's a really good movie . . . great acting, really good cast, written well and played great. It explained a lot about pandemics and what we were going to go through. Can honestly say it had such an affect on me that I had to own it even though I've seen multiple times.

The steelbook. OK it’s not the most amazing artwork, but I think I captures the spirit of the movie quite well. The image. Some people say Contagion was shot on film, but most sources agree it was a Red One MX digital and the results can be seen in 4K. Contagion was, according to Soderbergh, meant to be ultra-realistic, so we don’t have the dramatic visuals of a Michael Bay action film, but 4K and HDR make the most of scenes in homes, offices and labs. The biggest disappointment is the audio, not a huge deal for a reasonably priced 4k steelbook, but for some an Atmos soundtrack would have been a bonus. I’m not marking it down because Contagion is a character and dialogue driven movie, you could argue Atmos isn’t necessary.The plot. Does life imitate art? Would the world (with the exception of countries like Sweden) have locked down healthy people for a virus that for the vast majority of people was less of an inconvenience than the common cold? A bizarre media circus where outlets focussed on death, and people on ventilators in artificial comas, ignoring people like me who had a sore throat and muscle aches for a few days. Some people apparently weren’t keen on the social media conspiracy theory angle, but social media didn’t have the hold it has now when the film was released. If anything it wasn’t crazy enough, with 5G cell towers, microchip implants, rewritten DNA, ivermectin and chloroquine ‘cures’. It seems they weren’t far off when it came to vaccine production, but they were way off on the ‘single dose and you’re immune’ conclusion. enough. I can only imagine, if there’s the rumoured (philosophical) Contagion sequel what treats we have in store.So, if you haven’t seen this movie, unless you exclusively watch popcorn action films, stream it or buy it. If you have a 4K disc player and/or collect steelbooks, then what are you waiting for?

Dieser Film schildert den realistischen Ablauf einer tödlichen Pandemie (globalen Infektionskrankheit) aus der Perspektive unterschiedlichster Menschen. Einfache Menschen wie Du und ich, Entscheidungsträger in Gesundheitsbehörden und Regierungen, Medien und Business - die sich ausbreitende tödliche Infektion reißt das Leben der Menschen auseinander, die öffentliche Ordnung löst sich schrittweise auf, die Gesellschaft droht zu kollabieren.Der Film verzichtet größtenteils auf reißerische Elemente und schildert die Geschehnisse sehr nüchtern. Möglicherweise trifft er damit nicht den "Unterhaltsnerv" eines breiten Publikums, aber hier dürfte es auch weniger um Unterhaltung gehen. Hier geht es mehr um ein plausibles, glaubwürdiges Szenario, in welchem sich jeder wiederfinden kann, und der Film bezieht seine Spannung aus plausiblen, glaubwürdigen menschlichen Reaktionen, die das Beste oder auch das Schlechteste des Menschen zeigen können. Diese werden hier von hervorragenden Schauspielern verkörpert.Wer also realistisch die Folgen einer Pandemie miterleben will, dürfte hier die bislang glaubhafteste Fiktion zu diesem Thema finden und kann sich damit gut in die Lage der Menschen hineinversetzen. Wer dagegen unterhalten werden will und mitreißende Action und Dramen nach klassischer Hollywoodmanier sucht, könnte enttäuscht sein. Ich bin am Ende nur dankbar, dass es Menschen gibt, die sich professionell mit dieser Materie auseinandersetzen und uns hoffentlich zu Lebzeiten dieses tödliche Szenario wie vor ziemlich genau 100 Jahren mit der Spanischen Grippe ersparen.
