A pretty dull guide to a pretty, and not dull, car
This is yet another Veloce book on a particular model line, penned (if that's the word) by Brian Long, who has many such tomes to his credit. It's well produced, with lots of good colour illustrations. It offers a reasonably detailed model history, with a preliminary section on the Mercedes-Benz brand, and the development of this particular model; then there are chapters on the cars you can actually buy, and an appendix listing the various model variations across major markets. All very helpful and interesting up to a point. The point? Well, some of us find cars enjoyable objects to own and drive, and the geeky stuff about an extra 20 bhp for the 2010 model (etc) isn't really important. What are they like to drive? What are the significant, recurring mechanical problems with them? Why would we want one of these rather than its various German rivals? Why does the SLK appeal more to women than men, however hard the folks at MB try to butch it up? You won't find answers to any of that here, and in the latter case (gender appeal) there isn't even acknowledgement that it's a question.Bernard S Koehling's book on the R171, while far less lavishly illustrated, offers a more honest and thorough approach to the car, its joys, foibles and serious faults, and I'd recommend any potential purchaser to look at this. The Long book does have nice pictures though.

Beautifully produced and detailed. Will probably only read it the once, but still worth the price I paid.

Poor coverage of the subject.
For a book about the SLK R171, this attempt fails miserably.Of its 224 pages, the first 50 cover the history of Mercedes, including various other models, the earlier R170 version, and other non R171 info, so finally on page 50 there is something to read about the R171 !!!Of the remaining pages if you take out the details covering other models, GP connections, superfluous photos and details of other cars than the R171, you have less than half the book actually covering the subject, and half of that left is photos and manufactures blurb. Pretty poor really. What adds insult to injury is the Authors comment on page 6, when he says :-"I've had several people mention the inclusion of a buying section, but please forgive me for not writing one - a worthwhile, in-depth guide would call for a lot of space, and I believe the number of pages we have to play with are better assigned to the history of the car."He is wrong, to delete a few of the 120 odd pages of padding, in-order to add a very worthwhile element, would make the book at least value for money. !!!

As usual, an excellent reference for the R171 SLK
I found this volume to be a comprehensive review of the R171 SLK models including the SLK55 AMG variant (which is what I was looking for). Best of all it fits perfectly with all the other Haynes series and is an excellent addition to my automobile reference library.

Interresantes Buch
Trotz vieler bei mir schon vorhandener Informationen über den R171 gibt dieses Buch wieder neue Einblicke in den SLK. Empfehlenswert für SLK-Liebhaber, unser R171 ist jetzt 14 Jahre alt.

Order Received As Described
I was very satisfied with this order. It came after I found I had ordered the R171 book by Bernd S. Koehling. Seller agree to accept its return but I may keep the book after all since it's pristine. Thanks Brian Long.
