Portable Fire-Resistant Lockbox
This product occupies a middle ground between real fire and waterproof heavy SentrySafe boxes and light "fireproof" uninsulated bags abundant on Amazon, most of which are pretty useless for the advertised purposes. This is a real steel box, lightly insulated, that can certainly withstand short fire, and is advertised as fire-retardant, which it actually is. The main advantage of this box is that it's portable. Its weight is about 6 lbs., it has a handle, and it can be carried like a briefcase. Also, this chest can conveniently hold folders and envelopes, and plastic bags can be used to add a level of water insulation. For comparison, SentrySafe fire and waterproof analog (CHW20221) weighs 20 lbs., but its internal width is only 8.5 in, which means a regular sheet of paper has to be folded. In addition, this chest looks very nice and has a simple lock to keep it tightly closed and prevent "excessive curiosity" rather than intended theft or burglary because for these purposes it doesn't even need to be open, but can be easily carried away.Overall, this is in a way a unique product, similar to which is very hard to find even on Amazon.

A good, basic safebox but not a high-security item
I bought this to keep a few items in at work, where small personal items seem to have a way of disappearing. I keep my silverware (just cheap stainless flatware) in it, as well as a couple of cofee mugs, coffee filters or K-cups, snack items and reading glasses, etc, all of which have miraculously walked off on their own on prior occasions.I know they are just being borrowed, but they never seem to get returned. I lock them in here, put it high on top of the cabinets where I can reach it but most of my shorter coworkers can't (without a chair - kinda obvious) and the pilferage has stopped. This is a good, sturdy, well-made box, but the lock is simple, not a high-security item; it wouldn't stand up to tampering for long, but it serves my purposes.Being all steel, it would likely stand up to fire briefly, but intense heat or long exposure would toast anything inside eventually as it is not lined in any way. It is also in no way waterproof, as it has no seals or gaskets, so I wouldn't recommend it for cash, important papers, or other valuables. Still, a good, reasonably priced lockbox.

Sturdy chest with a simple lock
It's heavy, seems sturdy, and it's big enough to fit all my documents without folding them. The handles on each side are a nice addition. The lock is comparable to a desk lock, good enough to keep random people from snooping but if someone wants to get in then they will get in. If you're looking for that kind of security then this item is not for you, buy a safe instead. No idea how fireproof this chest is but it's quite heavy so I assume it'll be fine in case of a fire.5/5 Good size, sturdy, lockable, does everything I want it to do

Not Fort Knox, but very good
This is very sturdy, it doesn't look like it could be easily bent. The metal edges are all smooth and rounded. It closes with a piano hinge the entire length of one side. It has a handle on each of the short ends that slides in a little to take up less room. If this was packed full of something really heavy, the handles might not support it. For everyday use, the handles work well. The paint is khaki/tan color. (It looks green online.) The size is convenient because sheets of paper and folders will fit without folding. It isn't watertight, but the lid overlaps a bit, so it could resist a splash or two, but not immersion. It doesn't attract moisture like some of the other plastic types I researched. It might still be a good idea to throw in a couple of the silica gel packs that come with new shoes. The reason I deducted a star is that the lock seems like a weak point. The key doesn't always turn smoothly, and it engages by a metal lever that swings out to catch on the inside metal lip. It looks like it would be easy to break the lock if you had some time to work on it. It is obviously very portable, so if that concerns you, it would be easy to remove a handle and install a locking cable. So... bottom line is: Good security but not fail-safe.

Excellent Security Box
Considering there was many mixed reviews on this product, I didn't hold out exceptionally high hopes for it. However, when I received it, I was pleasently surprised. The steel feels like a thicker gauge, and it is fire-insulated. The hinge opens/closes smoothly, and the lock appears to be of regular or better quality. I attempted picking it with a paperclip like one reviewer (I have a desk lock that can be opened in this manner too) did, and was unable to open it. The lock likely has been changed since that review - the key does appear to be a semi-security type of key. Keep in mind, however, these aren't meant to be Fort Knox - they are designed to stop your average crime-of-oppurtunity thief. If you need something that won't open, invest in a Safe that is bolted to the floor.Big enough to hold 8x11 documents and then a little.Handles are securely attached on both sides. Couldn't ask for more out of a small security box for my Check stock.

does the job
I thought carefully about which of these metal lock boxes to purchase. This box is fire-retardant, not fire proof, but it is much lighter as a result. It is very likely that I will put it in a safe deposit box, so fire proofing is not my first concern. The size is perfect for storing important papers flat in letter size file folders. It also takes 9x12 envelopes for warranties, etc. The height of the box is 4". It has handles on each side to make carrying it easier. Last, it was less expensive than the other boxes. I don't imagine it would withstand anyone trying to break into it, but I doubt any of the other boxes would either; and my goal was more to get all my important papers in one place, so I could grab them in case of emergency, or easily transport them somewhere else for safe storage.
