Black Arrow Typical for it's Time
Typical film for it's time period and genre. Nothing outstanding either in costumes or action. Just a period piece done from what they had in stock.

"The Black Arrow" Hits The Mark
Based on the story by Robert Louis Stevenson, "The Black Arrow" is a fine film. Louis Hayward is in top form as the young knight who returns home after fighting in the Wars of the Roses. Gradually, he uncovers some shady "goings-on" involving his father's death, master-minded by perennial villain, George Macready. Janet Blair provides the romantic interest. This is a solid little film, with fine performances all around. Fans of the "knights in armor" school of film won't be disappointed by this one.

Action/Adventure
Very enjoyable adventure from 1948. Atmospheric castle scenes enhances this b/w production. Louis Hayward andGeorge Macready are memorable with a notable performance from Rhys Williams.

Beware.
I too bought this DVD, and despite it being labeled "All Regions" it DID NOT PLAY on my American Blue-Ray/DVD player. Very, very unhappy at this nonsense. This is the second time I received a DVD listed as all regions and then had it not play. Nothing was wrong with either disc.

Bullseye for "The Black Arrow"
The Louis Hayward film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Black Arrow" is my favorite. The movie is a top-notch swashbuckler, with fine performances by Hayward, Janet Blair -- a spirited co-star, George Macready in another well-wrought villainous turn as Sir Daniel, and the always amusing, if anachronistic, Edgar Buchanan -- straight out of a Western and into 15th-century England! The story, at a brisk 76 minutes, moves along apace, with fine archery, swordplay, and a brutal concluding joust punctuating a compelling tale of high romance. The Sony Pictures "Columbia Classics By Request" DVD is bare bones: just the film with 10-minute auto chapters. It is not widescreen, as Amazon advertises -- the film was released in 1948, some five years before the debut of Cinemascope, but the print is pristine and the DVD is well-worth the $20 sale price.Highly recommended for fanciers of the swashbuckler, and classic film fans in general.

Louis Hayward, Swashbuckler Extraordinary
Well acted adventure film. Did you know the star Louis Hayward was a ex marine. He was British and a US Marine Major.

Defective Disc
This review is for the disc, not for the film. I purchased it a few weeks ago and it couldn't play. No Disc is displayed on every standalone or computer player. When Amazon replaced this defective disc, the new one was also not recognizable. I suspect the whole batch is defective.

Black Arrow - 1948
Always liked this movie, based on a RLS story I also liked. Film moves at lightning speed, (no wasted scenes), to an exciting and suspenseful climax. If you like swashbuckling style flics; this one is for you.
