I wish I could give this a 4.95 star rating...but I can't
I have a boat that I use to fish off the Oregon coast (pictured). As you can see the gunwales/gunnels of my boat are relatively high. I want to be able to reach both down and out to reach large rockfish and lingcod that cannot be “bounced”. As a result, I ordered the 7' version of the FISHAPPY gaff. “Happy” is the operative word here. Let me count the ways:1) Solid strong fiberglass with a sturdy stainless steel hook.2) The hook itself has a nice wide 4” gap. We ARE gaffing big fish, right?!3) Three staggered, spiral wrapped, shrink wrapped, grips up the length of the shaft.4) An integrated tip cover for safety.5) 7' lo-o-o-o-ong feet to reach that big lingcod/tuna/dorado.6) A very fair price ($80) for what you are getting. This should last you a lifetime.I included a photo of my buddy with a dorado he landed/gaffed in Baja. Note the wooden shaft of our gaff and the fact there is no grip wrap near the hook. The FISHAPPY will address those issues. Additionally, we keep an old wine cork on the gaff hook tip when not in use. I cannot tell you how many times we have gone hunting around the deck of the boat looking for that cork after finishing a use of our gaff. Again, FISHAPPY solves a problem. I included a photo of me purposefully bending the fiberglass shaft of the gaff. Yup, it bends, but that's O.K. In my opinion, it's not a bad thing for the shaft of the gaff to have a bit of “forgiveness” when a big fish is thrashing about. Look at those tuna/yellowtail charters out of San Diego that use super long, flexible bamboo gaffs! Once I gaff the fish, I am lifting it out of the water with a hand-over-hand motion down the gaff (see #3 above) and then tipping the fish over the gunwale and down to the deck. Now to deal with the two small issues that keep me from giving this gaff 5 stars. Every review seems to mention the presence of the lanyard ring, but the lack of an actual lanyard. This is a legitimate complaint and one of the first things I will be adding to this gaff. It kind of surprises me that FISHAPPY got so many things right on this gaff but missed the simple lanyard. The other issue is the actual point of the gaff hook. If you look closely at my photo, you can see that the tip comes to a point, but it is clearly not a needle sharp point. I keep all my gaffs honed to a super-sharp point because I want the gaff to immediately penetrate the skin of the fish upon contact. I don't want the gaff tip “skidding” along the skin/scales of a fish looking for purchase. Sharpening the tip will take place immediately following the addition of the lanyard! All in all, this is still a really nice piece of equipment at a very fair price (I've seen gaffs pushing $300 online). But for the two issues, this would be a 5 star, easy.
