Very interesting mix of history and fiction
loved the writing and the erudition of the author. the book has recently been criticized at least in the United States because the narrator in the book seems a bit soft on Putin. I am not sure these criticisms are valid, because it is not certain that the author is of the same opinion as the narrator in the book.

Somehow frightening
Only 4 stars, because it is a novel. What is true, what is invented ?For some body like me working on "how to help brain", based on "how to neurons work"... whichi shows that neurons like to create "strange attractors", this book is an illustration of "strange attractors".Not a word on cooperation, concerning bottom up, the subject how does CIA manipulate young people from ukraine to push them to revolution.... With the answer, how to manipulage joung russian so that they are happy to be killed in Dombass ( Heuh, no, happy to defend a great idea or Russia)....As a conclusion :we really need to understand the way neuron work, so as to build tools that open mind ...

Page turner, extremely interesting book
This book should have won the Goncourt price. It is fascinating, unbiased and it allowed me to gain a better knowledge and understanding of the recent history of the USSR which shrunk to Russia. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in world cultures and geopolitics.

A brilliant depiction of Putin and power
This is one of the best novels I have read recently. It's fiction, of course, yet the reader feels as though they are in the Kremlin, witnessing the inner workings of power. The "mage" (Baranov) is chief propagandist for the Kremlin. We witness the interactions among Putin, Baranov, and various members of the oligarchy, as power is negotiated and leveraged in the context of historical events involving Russia and Ukraine. I highly recommend this book!

A Must Read for Anyone Living in the West
Empoli takes the reader into the testosterone-drenched innermost circle of one of the most important — and enigmatic — leaders of the modern world.Although the popularity of this book in France caused a stir in US media (the fear being that somehow it put French loyalty to a united front against the Russian Federation in question), I feel that it offers invaluable insights into understanding the thinking of a formidable and brilliant adversary. It forces us to see parallels in US history to the situation in Ukraine today that are uncomfortable and yet important to explore.More than anything, it is invaluable in grasping the organic interdependence of Europe vis à vis the more abstract notion of a Western World. As a whole, the book approaches the question of propaganda and disinformation from yet another perspective — and to what extent the East has emulated an approach already mastered in the West.

Fascinating Study of the Kremlin's Inner Working
I came across mention of this title during a lively discussion in "News in Slow French", a subscription news program for intermediate level students. The book sounded intriguing, so I downloaded a Kindle sample to see if this book might be a suitable translation project. An English translation isn't available, so I was a bit concerned that (working alone), I would be way over my head. The language is so clear and elegant that even my stumbling translation efforts could not destroy this vivid portrait of Putin's inner circle. As the book is about political mysteries and riddles it's doubly rewarding to puzzle out the translation. Highly recommended!
