A New Game 9. I Like This Kind Of Party 10. Life On The Wildside .com Football's appeal comes from the vicarious joys of seeing huge men racing around a field trying to knock each other's heads off, right? Not for the millions of people who grew up on the Sunday-morning highlight shows compiled by NFL films (which, through the magic of cable, can now be seen pretty much whenever you turn the TV on). The stylized slow-motion storytelling made the violence seem like a vicious ballet--something that Sam Peckinpah, John Woo, and Ringo Lam have also accomplished in their films--but what's a ballet without music? Sam Spence and Tom Hedden composed a series of classic themes that emphasized the relentless power and dangerous beauty of football (complete with marching drums, heroic horns, and dramatic string sections) to complement the highlights, and John Facenda's poetic narrations brought the whole thing together. Facenda possesses the deepest rumble of a voice this side of James Earl Jones, and listening to him narrate highlights form last week's game makes it sound as if the game were a timeless classic played decades in the past. The Power and the Glory is truly an unexpected pleasure. --Randy Silver

The Most Iconic Sports Music ... Ever"
Ever been suckered into watching an entire half-hour infomercial on the music of the 70's ... only to get the credit card out following it? Well, I have a fairly large catalog of CDs based on that sneaky audio-visual gimmick ... and listening to them now never seems to replicate the sense of nirvana I felt when compelled to buy them. There is no infomercial (that I am aware of) for "The Power and the Glory ...", but a childhood of watching NFL Films highlights in the 1970s has constructed a permanent visual archive in my mind. I am virtually certain that I am not alone when I say that only a few seconds of Sam Spence's orchestral ingenuity or a few words spoken by John Facenda will automatically generate visions of slow-motioned gridiron brutality. Nothing encapsulates the raw power of professional football than the iconic soundtrack of NFL Films and this CD captures it all. There are actually 36 tracks on this CD, they alternate from the classic voice-overs from players/coaches and mesmerizing poetry of John Facenda to the songs that provided the classic soundtrack to NFL films. The familiar voice-overs are somewhat humorous (especially some of the coaches) and serve somewhat as a setup for the following song. But it is the 23 tracks of classic NFL films music is what makes this CD so valuable in my opinion. Virtually every aspect of the game itself can be found in the music ... whether it be the battle being waged at the line of scrimmage ("West Side Rumble") , the slick movement of a pulling guard ("The Lineman") or the sneaky game of cat-and-mouse being waged between receivers and defensive backs ("Life on the Wildside"). Every horn, drumbeat and string provides the listener an aural taste of NFL football. What "Power and Glory" does most of all is take us back to the "glory days" of the game, before ESPN, the NFL Network and 24/7 year round coverage of the sport ... when all we had were those slow-motion recaps each week that were backed by this thunderous and triumphant music.

Absolutely Incredible and a Must-Have for Real Fans of the Game!
Wow! That's all I could think when I started listening to this album for the first time. From the opening trumpets and the late John Facenda's voice (which has been nicknamed 'the voice of God'), Sam Spence's compositions grab you right away and never let you go! The whole soundtrack is blended together rather seamlessly and of the 36 tracks on this cd, there are no turkeys. Some of my favorites include the opening four tracks. 'The Power and the Glory' flows into the next three and finishes with the recognizable 'Round Up' If the voiceover that precedes it, and 'Round Up' don't give you goosebumps, you may as well forget it! Also, the chimes in 'A New Game' as well as The Autumn Wind, The Raiders, West Side Rumble, Brahma Bull, they're all great! Some of these tunes remind me of the great music in the Clint Eastwood Fistful of Dollars triology. It's a fun cd to listen to in the car and, as another reviewer said, after listening to this you feel invincible. Those of you who have watched the old NFL films clips will recognize a lot of this music. I found out about this cd just recently, after having watched one of those dvds and thought to myself, I wonder if there's a soundtrack with this music on it. Within ten minutes I had ordered this cd. I was eleven years late in finding out about it, but better late than never!

The NFL Films experience at its finest
A wonderfully nostalgic trip down memory lane. This CD is a straightforward compilation that hints at the brilliance of Ed and Steve Sabol in bringing together the immense talents of John Facenda and Sam Spence. At the end of the day though, this is primarily a tribute to Spence. You may be surprised at how many of his arrangements featured are immediately familiar. Even the most casual NFL fan will be forced to pause for a moment and reflect on the ubiquity of his work in our culture. The vast majority of Facenda's vocal interludes are very generic in nature, rarely if ever referencing a particular player or team. It's an editorial decision that only enhances the timelessness of that which was already timeless. The most notable exception to this is Facenda's iconic recitation of the classic homage to the Raiders, The Autumn Wind; two minutes that so thoroughly capture the essence of the NFL Films experience that no less than Chiefs fans will grudgingly acknowledge its genius.

NFL Films Greatest Hits!
If you were a fan of "This is the NFL" or early "Inside the NFL" you'll remember these songs. Many of them appear in more recent video, especially, strangely, Spongebob Squarepants." The sound bites between each song help set the tone and add a lot of value. Glad I bought this!

Awesome!
Love this! Bought it just hopefully find a couple sound clips on it to use. Listened to it and loved the music and John Facenda clips. For those who don't know, John Facenda is the original voice of NFL films, the deep-voiced guy most of us have grown up with was Harry Kalas. I wouldn't have known any of this but wanted the sound clips so had to do some research. I'd have preferred Kalas just because more people my age or younger will be more familiar with him but if you ever watch the classic NFL films stuff (and most have, whether you realize it or not) you're going to be well familiar with Facenda anyway. Also, if you're into this stuff there are bigger sets to be found but if you just want some basics and not spend too much this CD is filled with really classic and recognizable tunes at a good price.
