a quick read
I read this in 2 days. It's a lot to take in, her account of being kidnapped, beaten, and terrified and then escaping from the first kidnappers when the brokering for her virginity fell through are all recounted in horrible detail. She returned home only to be kidnapped by Serbian militia types. They held her prisoner for 6 months and abused her in every way and up to the point of starving to death. But she was not trafficked. As horrifying as her ordeal was and her survival of it miraculous, this isn't a story of trafficking. And there wasn't enough detail to clear up more about the war that happened in Yugoslavia, Croatia, Bosnia. I don't understand anymore of it than I did before I read it...but she never claimed to be a historian

Such an interesting read! 100% recommend.
I only bought this book the other day and I’ve almost finished it. The story is so tragic and inspirational, it has really moved me. Lurata writes in such a gripping way, you really don’t want to book the book down.

Couldn't put it down and I'm not a reader
I think the last book I read was about 15 years ago. I'm not a reader but I saw a clip of this story on social and thought I'd give the book ago. Finished it in just over a day, found it very addictive which is odd given the subject but it's interesting to read about the history of the war etc. Well worth a read!

Heartbreaking, gripping and the true representation of how much the human spirit can endure!
I would highly recommend this book. Lurata’s story is one of heart break, cruelty, the worst of the human race but it also proves how much a person can endure and how the unconditional love of family can sometimes defeat evil.Lurata’s story is a hard read because of the brutality and sexually abuse she endured but she writes so well that you can’t put it down or turn away even when your conscious is screaming at you. I found I was educated in parts of history I had no idea about but the most prominent thing I took away from Lurata’s story was how loving, loyal and undeniably brave her and her family are/were, I particularly was struck by her uncle, the way she wrote about him, he just jumped off the page into my minds eye, I won’t spoil it for you but the part about her uncle and the village will stay with you forever, I know it will me.This story is great for making you appreciate the little things we take for granted in every day life, freedom, family, waking up in the morning and having free will.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Harrowing Indictment Of War
A heartbreaking memoir from a lady who has lived through times and experiences that most of us cannot even begin to imagine.Well written, and at times hard to read, Lurata takes you to the Balkans conflict of the 1990s.She describes her experiences and treatment with raw emotion, and great clarity of detail.A study of Man's inhumanity to Man and the futility of war, so moving, at times depressing, yet her indomitable spirit shines through. It is hard to believe that these awful events only occurred less than 30 years ago, and still even today the world does not learn.
