France released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), French ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), French ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Black humor dominates in this macabre story about a murderously animated elevator and its repairman Felix (Huub Stapel) and Felix's voluntary new assistant Mieke (Willeke van Ammelrooy), a reporter for a tabloid paper. When the elevator decapitates a security guard and tries to suffocate some party-goers, it becomes obvious that it needs more than a 60,000-mile check-up. After Felix narrows down the possibilities to some experiments his company is doing with microchips, he is coincidentally suspended from his job - indicating that the elevator is not acting alone. ...The Elevator (1983) ( De lift ) ( The Lift (Goin' Up) )

A great movie about a killer elevator.
The DVD: Has audio in 3 languages: Dutch, French and English. The Menu is in French. On the negative side is that you have to bare a few minutes of an old "say no to piracy" message. The Movie: I first saw the movie when it was released in the Greek state television in the mid-late '90's. It is a B movie. But the arguement and the story win you from the first moment. Since then, i still watch if the elevator is there, or it pretends to be, so you'll be killed falling through the elevator shaft. Almost 20 years after i first saw it, this second time, i enjoyed the movie even better. The ethics and morality has changed so much since the early '80's that transforms it into a cult piece of art.

Elevator Horror!
If you fear lifts, don't watch this movie. Your worst fears will be confirmed. The movie is something a rare as a Dutch sci-fi/horror production and rarely screend but watchable, specially for horror buffs. The product itelf was in fine condition and having searched for it for a long time, I was pleased to receive it.

Excellent euro horror from Dick Maas
Very good Dutch movie directed by Dick Maas who would go on to make Amsterdamned and also a remake of this movie in 2001.Der Lift or The Lift is about a lift in a high rise business development that appears to have a mind of its own. Trapping whoever enters it and then using different methods like turning the heat up for suffocation or slamming the doors shut for the odd beheading. The movie sounds like a B one. But it isn't. It's quite a dark movie with a grimy atmosphere complemented by a killer synth score by Mass himself. It's up to an engineer played very well by Huub Stapel to fix this broken lift- but as he finds out this will be his hardest on call job he's ever had.The final 15 minutes have no dialogue as the tension grows and grows. The Lift is a nice find and a horror gem. Gorehounds should be pleasantly pleased, but beware this is mostly a talkie picture. Warners are distributing this one, so the overall package ie sound and picture is fine, apparently they got pretty excited about it at the 84 Cannes Festival when this appeared and have been attached to it ever since.ABOUT THE DVD- You should understand that this is a French release DVD. But you can switch languages to English and have the subtitles turned off, quite rare given that this is a Dutch film, so this is the advantage of having an obscure movie put out by Warners. The disadvantage is having to sit through a 1min ad about illegal downloading- which you can't skip, and you sit there just having bought the film. COMPANIES NEED TO STOP THIS.
