Jack London is for real
Jack London has spent a lot of time with dogs (and wolves) and makes a convincing effort to give the animal's point of view based on what animals actually want and how they learn and change. This makes the story much stronger and more interesting than countless silly stories where the author puts human thoughts into animal characters. The story is pretty dark in parts, so may be unsuitable for very young children.

Highly Recommended
This is an amazing story typical of Jack London's wonderful talent. I recommend you read Call of the Wild first as it will get you primed for this book. It was thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable.

Great story
Got this for my son’s summer reading for school. I also read it with him. Had forgotten how wonderful it was! The copy itself is good, sturdy and no pages fall out like with cheap paperbacks.

The Majestic Wild
Read this in 1961, when I was in 7th grade. It made me throw my children's books away. Suddenly I knew what real literature was. It took me from Tom Swift, and The Hardy Boys books, to an understanding of how great themes, beautiful language, and human experience could open a transcendent new world for me. From here I would move on to The Call of the Wild, Kidnapped, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Young Lions. But it all began here. And how those opening lines raised the hackles on my youthful neck, and still do 57 years later:"Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been stripped by a wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean toward each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadness … It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild."No, this certainly was not the Hardy Boys! When I was young this book was referred to as a good book for boys. Today it's considered a good book for boys and girls. But as the above lines clearly show, this is a book for boys and girls, men and women. It's obviously NOT just a book for children, nor was it considered such when it was originally published. And I've never read more haunting lines than this first chilling paragraph of this old classic. By all means recommend it for your middle or high school kid, but read it for yourself if you've not done so, or if it's been a long time since.

Simple but well composed copy
There are plenty of cheap books that look like they were printed off the internet by kindergartners. I made the mistake of buying one of those first, returned it, and bought this one. Very pleased with this one. Great cover, reads well, good book. And if it's a book review you are interested in, Jack London is phenomenal and this is one of his best.

My oldest son was learning about this book and author last year. He loves anything to do with wolves. I'm planning on giving it to him for Christmas. He's gonna be so excited!

Classic
Great read for any age. I loved London's tone and style. Only complaint is the illustrations could be clearer.
