scholarly account for the era written in
The author did a scholarly review of the topic. She compared diaries and works of that period and gave professionalinsights into the strengths and weaknesses of previous accounts of this period. The type is small makes readingdifficult. However, the information is professional and enlightening.

Rountree does a nice job of discussing the sources used to paint this ...
Thematic chapters provide a concise and well documented description of Powhatan society. Rountree does a nice job of discussing the sources used to paint this picture and some of the interpretation behind her conclusions. It's a fine book, one that does a nice job of describing everyday life and material culture, but also getting to the Powhatan's ideas on religion and their political structures.

Virginia's Pre-colonial Inhabitants
This is a detailed and carefully crafted scholarly treatise filled with lots of reliable information regarding what is known of the world, life, and customs of the Native American nation that lived under Chief Powatan's rule when the English arrived to colonize Virginia. The copy I got was even autographed by the author, the leading authority in the field. It has motivated me to purchase other books Dr. Rountree has written on the topic.

Excellent hsitory of a little documented Native American culture.
I had a personal interest in the Powhatan Indians of Virginia. It was difficult to find much information on this tribe and its interaction with Europeans. This book provided more information on the topic than I could find on the Internet and its sources are well documented. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the topic.

Insightful
This is a good in depth analysis and description of the Powhatan people with who they acquainted with and their social norms. Most of the empirical evidence is based off archaeological finds and written documents.

The Powhatans Indians - great read
Very good read so far, very interesting. The author doesn't do herself justice in the beginning when she says her book should only be used as a support tool during a lesson with other materials. I do think this book itself has given me an invaluable insight in the daily life of American Indians.
