Soda Jerk appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on August 22, 1953. This was Norman Rockwell's 271st cover for the newspaper and the second out of five that was featured on the cover in 1953. The artist had three sons who often posed for his paintings. The chick magnet in this painting is his youngest son Peter. Rockwell got the idea for this painting while listening to his son talk about his summer job at the soda shop. The other models for the painting were his sons classmates. Norman Rockwell was one of America's leading artists. He chose to tell the story of the American dream, the detail of a simpler time, painted with warmth and humor. He tapped into the nostalgia of the American people with paintings that were often idyllic and expressed enthusiasm for the ordinary. In preparations for a painting Norman Rockwell would set up a scene, using his friends and neighbors, taking hundreds of photos until satisfied.
